Films portraying cultural groups at times may fabricate or misinterpret the truth for the desire of popularity but, The Snow Walker properly depicted certain characteristics of the Inuit. This film even took additional measures to hire an actual Inuit actress to portray their Inuit female character. Annabella Piugattuk was born in the Northwest territories in Canada while being raised in a family where Inuit tradition was proudly exercised and passed down. With the dependable cultural background and experience casting Piugattuk was the perfect fit for the film’s Inuit character. Having a true connection between the character and actress further makes the film worthwhile. The Snow Walker (,2003) is a Canadian drama film directed by Charles Martin Smith which is rated PG. The film focusses on the hardships Charlie played by Barry Pepper faces once his typical routine changes upon meeting a clan of Inuit people while on the job. When Charlie lands near the Arctic Ocean to complete one of his tasks he comes across a clan who has a very ill member who happens to be Kanaalaq played by Annabella Piugattuk. In the beginning, Charlie tries to be independent but on foreign land he cannot succeed without the help of Kanaalaq. With Kanaalaq’s amazing wildlife skills as an Inuit, she takes initiative to educate Charlie and proceed to work together although still facing several adversities. While the pair struggle on isolated land, the film also depicts Charlie’s community back home and how they are dealing with a missing member. As the film progresses the audience can become knowledgeable in some ways the Inuit survive.
