One of the world’s greatest, richest industrial business leaders of the late 19th early 20th century Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in November 25 1835. Andrew’s family consisted of four people, William Carnegie, father, Margaret Morrison Carnegie, mother, and younger brother Thomas M. Carnegie. Dunfermline was known as center of the damask trade in Scotlan; his father William Carnegie was a damask weaver. Andrew’s family was not wealthy “looking at the cottage today, one wonders how two adults and a child could have lived there.” However, Andrew become very wealthy, respected and famous man later on in life. In 1848, his family moved to America for a new life, and at that time Andrew was 12. His family moved first to New York, then they moved to Allegheny, Pennsylvania. In Allegheny Pennsylvania, he and his father worked at Anchor Cotton Mills. At age 14, Andrew quit work at the cotton factory and his uncle helped him get a new job as a messenger at Atlantic & Ohio Telegraph Company. Two years later, he got a better position at the telegraph office as the telegraph operator. Also, Carnegie grew love for education. Although, he had no formal education, he tried to study as much as he could at the public library; he also loved reading, music, and classic literature. At the age of almost 20, Andrew became the bread winner for his mother and younger brother Tom when his father died in October 1855. However, “Andrew was close to his uncle, with whom he would carry on a lifelong conversation about history and literature and politics. He adored his mother and would share living quarters with her as long as she lived. In 1891, he gave New York City the concert hall “Carnegie Hall.” In 1900, he established Carnegie institution of technology. In 1910, he started “Carnegie Endowment for International peace.” Also, in 1911 he gave 125 million “Carnegie Corporation of New York” for educational needs like schools, libraries, researches and publication. “In his lifetime, Carnegie gave away more than $350 million. After his death, his last $30 million was also given away to foundation, charities, and pensioners. ” Mr. Carnegie played a very big and important role in American culture. He was and he is an example for many people. How an immigrant, a person from poor family can do so much for the world and be a part of history today.
