Cosmology, derived from the Ancient Greek ‘Cosmos’ meaning order and “Logos” meaning reason, is the study of the creation and evolution of the universe, as well as humanities role within the world. Within ancient cultures, cosmology was interpreted as a means to understand the origins of both the mortal world and the world of the divine. These stories were not dogmatic or unchallengeable, and were instead fluid, flexible and open ended.

One key feature of ancient cosmology was that there could be multiple stories and theories that were created to explain the origin of the universe within a singular religion or culture. Greek society began to regard natural phenomena as being separate from the gods, as opposed to the Earth being created as a source of entertainment for the gods. During this time period, the Greeks began to consider more abstract approaches to the origin of the universe, focusing on cosmic mapping, rather than trying to determine a concrete reason for existence. Whilst the gods are still considered a part of Greek society, the philosophers interacted with them in a more impersonal way, and determined a stronger distinction between the tangible and the intangible. Through this, the Greek philosophers encouraged more complex, and nuanced understanding of the creation of the universe. For example, Plato proposed that the Earth was the stationary centre of the universe, and that the stars, sun, and other planets revolved around it. As a result of these nuanced views on cosmic creation, the Greek philosophers proposed the ideas of multiple, pleasant, ordered heavens that were only accessible by the virtuous and the righteous. Similarly, they discussed how the the Earth was, in comparison, a chaotic and disordered place, thus implying that an Earthy existence limited and burdened
