“The film distorts history beyond recognition” (Crazy Horse). Crazy Horse puts this statement out in the public to open their eyes about Disney’s version of Pocahontas. The movie Pocahontas is about an Indian woman who falls in love with John Smith. Smith is a captain in search of the new world and gold. It was released in 1995, and the events it’s based on happened in 1607. Disney shows Smith immediately falling in love with Pocahontas when they meet. The relationship is continued throughout the movie in secret at first before they’re discovered. An important detail to realize is that in Adam’s interpretation he says; “Smith never mentioned Pocahontas in A True Relation. Therefore, a thinking person can’t believe that.” Since Smith never said anything about Pocahontas or even a relationship with any female, Disney's version should not depict an event that didn’t happen. A point overlooked is Smith later wrote General History years after True Relations and only mentions Pocahontas saving him. Once again there is no mention of any sort of relationship that is shown in the movie. Also Smith states “And this relief, most gracious Queen, was commonly brought us by this Lady Pocahontas” (Smith, “1616”). Smith was describing how after being taken prisoner, Pocahontas would bring goods to him and his crew. The Disney movie could’ve used a scene like this, showing that Pocahontas was helpful but instead the whole relationship was exaggerated into romance. Disney showing a romantic relationship, is not only inaccurate but disrespectful towards the tribe and Pocahontas
