Some humans have the luxury to be able to speak and act based on their feelings toward another person or thing. The novel The Miraculous journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo demonstrates what Lucy the dog and Edward the china rabbit shared; it showed us that at the end of the day actions speak louder than words. We have a lot to learn from the unconditional love that Lucy has for Edward Tulane. She doesn’t have the ability to speak, but her actions show how much she loves Edward and how much he means to her. In the case of Lucy and Edward’s relationship, we see that their love is only action based rather than verbal, which we can see through Lucy’s actions toward Edward. The man that enters the empty freight car kicks Lucy on the side and that makes her yelp in surprise he kicks he because she wouldn’t stop barking. Lucy was barking because that is the way that she could protect Edward and Bull. At that exact moment, Edward wanted to do something to help Lucy, but he couldn’t do anything he just lied on the floor and waited. Here we can read how their love is so big for each other that they want to help each other, but they cannot do it. This is because one is made of china and the other one is just a small dog that does not have much power. Once the man turns and opens the empty railcar door and with a soft kick Edward is sailing into the darkness and flied through the late spring air. “…. from far behind him, he heard Lucy’s anguished howl. Arroooooooooo, ahhhhrrrrrrooo, she cried” (DiCamillo 106). Due to that, some people have been told so many things and then that person did the opposite of what they just said. It is important to remember that actions can speak louder than words can and that actions can mean more to people than words can. Actions can really show people that you care about, how much you care about then and how much they mean to you, without having to use words to tell them what you really feel for them.
