Some humans have the luxury to be able to speak and act based on their feelings toward another person or thing. The novel The Miraculous journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo demonstrates what Lucy the dog and Edward the china rabbit shared; it showed us that at the end of the day actions speak louder than words. We have a lot to learn from the unconditional love that Lucy has for Edward Tulane. She doesn’t have the ability to speak, but her actions show how much she loves Edward and how much he means to her. In the case of Lucy and Edward’s relationship, we see that their love is only action based rather than verbal, which we can see through Lucy’s actions toward Edward. The man that enters the empty freight car kicks Lucy on the side and that makes her yelp in surprise he kicks he because she wouldn’t stop barking. Lucy was barking because that is the way that she could protect Edward and Bull. At that exact moment, Edward wanted to do something to help Lucy, but he couldn’t do anything he just lied on the floor and waited. Here we can read how their love is so big for each other that they want to help each other, but they cannot do it. This is because one is made of china and the other one is just a small dog that does not have much power. Once the man turns and opens the empty railcar door and with a soft kick Edward is sailing into the darkness and flied through the late spring air. “…. from far behind him, he heard Lucy’s anguished howl. Due to that, some people have been told so many things and then that person did the opposite of what they just said. It is important to remember that actions can speak louder than words can and that actions can mean more to people than words can. Jacob’s love for Marlena causes him to make unexpected and often foolish decisions. When Jacob suddenly kissed Marlena, her reaction caused him to realize “‘[he] shouldn’t have done that,’” (Gruen, 2006, p. 153). Not only does Marlena love Jacob, she also portrays affection for her horses as she protects them heroically. However, she is not the only one that admires the animals. Some people even consider him to be “America’s most important and original philosophical theologian”. He gave a famous sermon that greatly affected the Roman Christian tradition. Edwards helped anybody and everyone he could. His Many followers became known as the New Light Calvinist Ministers over time. Edwards took great pride in helping others throughout his life. He contributed to many Christian conversions, and was a big part of The Great Awakening. With everything Edwards dedicated himself to throughout his life, he helped influence the Roman Catholic traditions.
What comes to mind when one thinks of the word ‘puppy’? It is probable describe a puppy as a lovable, adorable, and cuddly companion. However, one might also identify the animal as a menace and a liability or even as a delicious source of food. Why does this single word hold so many meanings? One’s past experiences and biases influences these conflicting views and attitudes. For instance, an individual’s fond view of puppies may exist because they were raised with puppies and consequently grew affectionate toward the animals. On the contrary, if another individual has not bonded with puppies as pets, then they will share the latter point of view. In the short story “Puppy” by George Saunders, the multiple characters view single events and objects with contrasting perceptions. Therefore, instead of painting a precise picture of the characters and the plot, the story expresses several views regarding the morals of the characters, the motivations of their actions, and the meaning of the events that take place. In “Puppy”, George Saunders explores the theory that perception is not an elementary, universal definition of an object or idea, but a complex interpretation that is influenced by one’s unique and varying past experiences and opinions. The complexity of perception is evident in one the story’s narrator’s, Marie’s, vantage point.
Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway both convey their ideas of love in their respective stories The Lady with the Pet Dog and Hills like White Elephants in different ways. However, their ideas are quite varying, and may be interpreted differently by each individual reader. In their own, unique way, both Chekhov and Hemingway evince what is; and what is not love. Upon proper contemplation, one may observe that Hemingway, although not stating explicitly what love is; the genius found in his story is that he gives a very robust example of what may be mistaken as love, although not being true love. On the other hand, Chekhov exposes love as a frame of mind that may only be achieved upon making the acquaintance of the “right person,” and not as an ideal that one may palpate at one instance, and at the another instance one may cease to feel; upon simple and conscious command of the brain. I agree with Hemingway’s view on love because it goes straight to the point of revealing some misconceptions of love.
Gereal P. Mallon (1994) states there are numerous reports in literature that exemplify the value of human contact with animals. Studies have indicated animals such as dogs play an important role in not only socializing, but a significantly greater role in humanizing children. Dogs in particular due to their interactive and affectionate nature have become increasingly effective in adjunct therapy settings of children and youth. Piaget (1929) revealed in his research a stage in child development that it is inherently natural for a child to attribute human characteristics to an animal. Cartoons, fairytales, and mythology designed for children often depict animals as important roles of human interaction. Children are even found to project their inner feelings onto an animal, which they perceive as loving. These animals too do not talk back or argue which provides the continuous degree of nonjudgmental interaction essential to a child’s recovery process.
Edward’s detachment from society is the result of a floozy’s lie, a deranged woman’s religious claims, and a teen with an inflated ego that all seem to hate Edward because of his differences and because they cannot tell what he is and what his intentions are. Edward is a good person and he is not even a real human being. He is more kind and uncorrupt then the real human beings who live in the community. It matters to Joyce, Esmeralda, and Jim that Edward be definable and that they can recognize him as something with emotions and motives. However, Edward does not make any sense to any of them at all and their prejudices continue to exist because they do not and will not take the time to figure out that Edward’s differences are actually not as horrific as they make them out to be.
A magnificent creature that just want to feel simple things like freedom, be social, a caress. In this poem I can appreciate the suffering of a creature in captivity whose desire is to experience such elementary things as being the companion of a human and give his love, feeling a touch, a little affection and attention; things that should not be denied to any living creature. This poem is a desperate cry for freedom and what for me are the basic rights of any household animals, such as dogs.
