Philippians is often referred to as one of the prison epistles as Paul most likely wrote this letter while under house arrest. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul describes what it means to live as a forgiven, humble, joyful child of God (Fryar, 2011). This theme of Joy is present throughout the book of Philippians. Although Paul is under house arrest, awaiting trial, been beaten and abused as a result of his preaching, he knows and reassures the Philippians that true joy is found in Christ alone. “Rejoice in the Lord always. “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:14–15). True humility comes from total reliance on God. As Christian leaders, don’t just look to your own or the organizations interests, but to the interests of others and remain considerate of others.
Modeling or Servant Leadership – “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Understand that as Christian leaders, we are instruments of Christ and that through our leadership we influence the lives of other people and guide them to become more Christ like. Therefore we must be willing to model what we want our followers to be and do (Lawrence, 2007). This can only be accomplished if we are living in accordance with God’s commands, if our actions and behaviors align with Jesus
