The documentary “Policing the Police,” by PBS, assists in providing insight into problems facing the city of Newark, New Jersey, and its police department. The documentary displays the opinions of both the police officers and the people of the communities on the most pressing crime related issues in the city and the solutions to them. The variety of perspectives that documentary provides is very informative and forces the viewer to look at the problems of police brutality in a more complex manner rather than black and white. Ultimately, the documentary exposes the failure of the Newark Police Department to work effectively and the solutions new leaders are beginning to implement. The documentary shows various instances of police officers making unlawful stops on people which leads the violation of people’s constitutional rights and use of unnecessary force for some situations. Although the city of Newark has its problems, the documentary presents the various forces for change within the police department and local government that provide reassurances that the city is making progress towards the improvement of its police department. I feel that this documentary does a fantastic job of dispelling the myth that police brutality does not exist. One of the major problems the city of Newark faces is the economic situation of many of its inhabitants. The generational poverty and unemployment combined with the history of racism and police violence continue to perpetuate crime culture. Thus, for true change to occur the economic situation must improve, which is no easy feat. Another solution that may help the problems Newark and its police department face are the removal of stop and frisk procedures and the implementation of community policing. If the community can trust the police department and see police officers without having to fear being killed or losing a loved one; then the community would be more committed to working with police to reduce crime in the area. Building trust with the community should be the first step the Newark Police Department takes to make a change in the city. Some other solutions include improvement to the training of officers and making the administration and communication systems more efficient.
