Positivity in Death from “Little Talks” For many people, death can be a disheartening topic or event. It is a loss of someone that most times is deeply cared for and loved. “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men describes the aftermath of a man’s death from the perspective of both the man and his widow. According to Nanna, one of the lead singers of the group, "It’s about a couple and the husband passed away and it’s from the conversation between the two of them” (CITE). At first read, the poem seems to be depressing and alludes to the idea of a breaking relationship. The relationship appears to have been long term because the poem speaks of days when they were young and “…an old voice in my head” (11). For example, one stanza is repeated 3 times in different parts of the poem and the final stanza is repeated 3 times in succession. At the end of the poem, one of the stanzas states, “though the truth may vary//This ship will carry our body safe to shore” is repeated 3 times (48). There are also 3 different words that are repeated 3 times in an almost echo effect. Those words in order are gone, torn and wait. The number 3 is largely used in literature as a reference to the idea of the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Pokhilko further states, “…sometimes we come across the thought that thrice-repeated baptism reminds of the three days of Christ's burial in the tomb)” (Pokhilko). To use this number as a reference to the benign and heavenly concept or idea leads the reader to believe that the man’s spirit is being sent to Heaven. Other carefully chosen words within the lyrics are reminiscent of death, including “empty”, “…as I sleep”, “…close your eyes”, “[i]t’s killing me…”, and “…you disappear” (1-28).
