Intuitive eating is a revolutionary approach that heals the dieting mind after the effects of chronic dieting. The concept sound like some crazy process that takes a lot of work, but really it is just how to eat “normal”. An intuitive eater is defined as a person who “makes food choices without experiencing guilt or an ethical dilemma, honors hunger, respects fullness and enjoys the pleasure of eating.” In our culture today, very few people can eat in this way. The book, “Intuitive Eating”, has taught me that food is about nourishment and has connected me to my body’s signals for hunger, fullness, and food preference. There are 3 eating (or dieting) styles one could associate with: the Careful Eater, the Professional Dieter, and the Unconscious Eater. For me personally, I think at one point in my life I have been all 3 of these eating styles. Back in high school, when I first learned about nutrition, I became the Careful Eater. I would only eat “clean and healthy” foods and think too much about every food situation. After this point in my life, when my body gained back the weight, I became obsessed with losing it again and became the Professional Dieter. I tried every latest diet, I tried many juice cleanses, and gave myself many forbidden foods. All in pursuit of being thin in my society. These were short periods in my life that happened mostly in high school. After high school, I made a psychological change for myself, learned to love myself and my body, and stopped being these types of eaters. However, I am glad I experienced being these types of eaters because as a dietitian, I will know what these people are going through with thoughts about food. Right now, I believe I eat very intuitive, but at times identify myself as an Emotional Unconscious Eater. It is difficult to be this type of eater in today’s health-conscious society with all the nutrition, food, and weight messages in the media. The principles given in this book have given me insight into ignoring society and staying an intuitive eater. These principles include: reject the diet mentality, honor your hunger, make peace with food, challenge the food police, feel your fullness, discover the satisfaction factor, cope with your emotions without using food, respect your body, exercise- feel the difference, and honor your health- gentle nutrition. The principle that I feel I need to work on the most is “Cope with your emotions without using food”. When I am feeling extremely stressed, I need to learn that food won’t fix this feeling. Food may comfort or distract me, but it won’t solve the problem. Now every time I think I want something to eat, I take a time-out and ask myself if I am biologically hungry or what feelings I have. Ways I can use to cope with my feeling without using food include: taking time to breathe deeply or meditate, talk with friends, get a massage, ask someone for a hug, or put fresh flowers in my
