Problems with Obesity in America

Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent American obesity. In “Bad Food? Tax it, and Subsidize Vegetables”, Mark Bittman suggests that the people of America should stop eating unhealthy foods so often. In the article, Bittman tells his audience that people have “heart disease, diabetes and cancer are all in large part caused by the standard American Diet” (page 35). He also states that eating healthy can result to a better health care system saving millions of lives. The big issue is Americans eating unhealthy every day, but proposing a plan to help stop it from happening. Bittman comes up with new ways to help stop unhealthy eating, but some of his ideas will not work. He comes up with an idea of simply putting a taxes on unhealthy foods and selling staple foods cheap. That will not work because that would upset the processed food companies and also the consumers the foods. “It would bug those who might resent paying more for soda and chips and argue that their right to eat whatever they wanted was being breached” Bittman said (page 36). Another plan Bittman suggests is that we subsidize staple foods. The idea would cause people to use their health care and everyone would be able to afford healthier foods. “Direct subsidies to farmers for crops like corn soybeans keep the prices of many unhealth... ... middle of paper ... ...y school lunches are best because they teach children good food from bad. They could use those skills for future use. By teaching children across the nation at an early age can increase the chances of them carrying no diseases in the near future. Having to eat so much is problem and the authors have great ideas to help prevent over eating. Americans around the world need to stop eating so much because they play as a role model to the youth and young adolescents. Healthy eating is the most beneficial despite how it sometimes taste.
