Feminist Ethics; For or Against Commercial Surrogacy? If I were a man, there wouldn’t be a question! Moral issues are so complex that the guidance of a theory can be ambiguous. This is the case for commercial surrogacy. Commercial surrogacy is when the woman who is carrying the baby is paid a large sum of money for the pregnancy. (Worldwide Surrogacy, 2017). Feminists have argued whether commercial surrogacy is ethical. Exploring commercial surrogacy can help find clarity to this issue. Oppression is the exercise of power in a cruel or unjust manner (Merriam- Webster, n.d). In surrogacy, the parents hold more power. Commercial surrogacy reminds the parents to respect the surrogate (Ainsworth, 2014). Feminist ethics encourages listening to women, by equalizing power within their relationships. Parents have more power than the surrogate as they receive a tangible end which is unjustified and oppressive. Commercial surrogacy creates a mutually beneficial relationship where power is equally distributed. Living in a patriarchal society can be oppressive and detrimental to women. Laws banning commercial surrogacy allow for patriarchal societies to continue to thrive (Ainsworth, 2014). Feminist theory ensures that emotions are recognized when making ethical decisions but, fails to realize the emotions associated with denying commercial surrogacy. Only women are capable of child birth and, by creating laws that fail to empower women to have children, brings women down and further uplifts men.
