What I learned during the observation is that have a good layout and a good environment setting children are more willing learn and play with the children around them. They need to feel that they are apart of the classroom. That is part of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need. You environment the classroom need to make children feel safe because if they don’t feel safe they are always going to be on high alert and not pay attached to what going on they are also not going to play or do anything in the classroom. Having the right environment makes it easy for children to explore and learn everything they need have those center or station is not just their for children to have fun and play that because while they are playing and have fun they are learning.
The environment of the classroom is important because is a social place where children have to feel secure so they can become part of the lesson and for the lesson to succeed. School is a perfect example of structure. Almost every school consist of the same thing which is desks and a board to demonstrate the lesson. All the desk are facing one way so that the children have a more likely chance to pay attention to the instructor and Proper room arrangement provides predictability in students, which has a calming effect I presume. When students are better able to understand their environment and anticipate what is coming next, they tend to be less apprehensive. Their mental states are more conducive to learning new material and also a decrease in misconduct
During this assignment, I needed to observe infant/toddler from birth to 36 months. The observation was for 30 minutes while the infants interact with the world. While the observation, I created a running record observation to keep track of the developmental domains. The observation took place in the ECE classroom. There were three children which were Charlotte, Loui, and Benjamin. They were placed in the center of the class where there was different kinds of toys. During the observation, Charlotte and Loui were interacting with one another. However, Benjamin wasn’t interacting at all. Loui interacted with classmates and went outside the circle to get some toys.
In this assignment I am going to describe a child observation that I have done in a nursery for twenty minutes in a play setting. I will explain the strengths and weaknesses of naturalistic observation through the key developmental milestones based in Mary Sheridan (2005) check-list and provide a theoretical explanation to support the naturalistic observation.
The facility I did my observation at was Tutor Time in Fairfield, and I arrived there at 3:15pm. When I arrived there, I could instantly see that it was a child centered program by the feel of the artwork the kids had made that were on the walls, the passing classrooms and it smelled like sugar cookies throughout the building. It was very quiet in the office area and in the halls when I was walking to the class of preschoolers.
I observed a child at the elementary school I was working at for SERVE while he was playing during lunch. I first walked around the playground during recess to get a feel for the school and the students on their breaks. As I sat down on a bench near the playground I noticed there was a lot of segregation between genders throughout the activities. For example, I saw that the girls were more likely to be found playing “house”, hopscotch or playing with other girls whereas the boys gravitated towards the more physical activities such as sports like football, kickball and basketball. Although there were expectations for both groups around the playground jungle gym area with monkey bars, slides and more, that had an equal balance of boys and girls. I chose to focus on a boy, around seven or eight years old, who was socializing with others and engaging in various activities.
The classroom that I observed in was arranged in a simple way. In the dramatic play center there was a long coat rack and each hook was labeled with an image and name of the outfit. This was done so the children know where do place the clothing when they are done with it or cleaning up. Also in this center was a cash register, puppets, an oven, refrigerator, ironing board, sing, dishwasher, a table set and a comfy chair. Their block center was small, and sectioned off by a shelf and an arch way in the corner of the room. In this center there was also a table. I felt that they children would not have enough room to build although I did not measure the area. The art center had stamps, children’s art work, an easel, magazines and other essential art supplies. In the same area as the art center was the writing center. In this center was maps, chalk and chalk board, stencils, a ruler, notepads, loose paper and pencils.
Children are complex, and the way a child develops differs from individual to individual. The study of children is a field that researchers, scientists, theorists and educators have been exploring for decades. CHYS 1F90 studies the foundations of childhood development and allows the students to look at the way children develop through multiple lenses. Many conclusions have been drawn, observing how, when and why children develop the way they do. Jerry and Samantha are both grade one students who are unrelated. Although these two students are both the same age, they are different on a variety of accounts. Jerry is a shy and introverted boy who quickly becomes uncomfortable while talking to adults, teachers and peers, contrariwise Samantha is immensely confident and demonstrates extroversion around others. After analyzing both Jerry and Samantha through a biological, learning theorist and psychoanalytical lens, the reasons for the first-graders differences are clear. Depending on the lens in which an individual looks through when analyzing the development of children, interesting and intriguing conclusions can be drawn regarding the broad topic of understanding how children develop.
Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them.
While walking through the front gates of County elementary school, you see children of all ages playing while they wait for the school bell to ring. Walking to the classroom that I will be observing you see students with their parent’s line up waiting to get signed in. The students are to be signed in by a parent or guardian for safety precautions, and shows that the child was signed into school. As a visitor, I am to sign myself in, this shows I was in the classroom, at what time was I there, and reason for visiting the classroom.
The space and area in which a child is learning must be accommodating to all of their needs. A responsive environment is a space of any size that is set up and presented in a manner that promotes social-emotional development, physical development, spiritual development, intellectual/cognitive and language/literacy skills. It is important that the class or room promotes a healthy learning environment which allows the children to be independent while still pushing their skills and abilities. Environments are able to shape and direct a child’s learning experience, “We now know that the environment is a valuable teacher if it is amiable, comfortable, pleasing, organized, clean, inviting and engaging…This is true of floor space, ceiling, and wall space” (Krentz, Emerita, & University of Regina, 2013, p.44).
I gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Luna. Jeffrey has taken quite a liking to being a big brother. He likes to hold and rocker her and helps with feeding her. Jeffrey is still a slow-to warm child. He can communicate fairly well and is now using mostly complete sentences and seems to understand most of what I say. He occasionally makes errors of overregularization. He has taken an interest in music and singsongs even though he usually repeats a certain part a lot. I encourage this by taking him to local performances of children’s musicals. Jeffrey has learned the routines pretty well and is reasonably cooperative for his age. He is rarely aggressive to adults or other children. Jeffrey’s fantasy play has become more elaborate and sometimes includes superheroes or cartoon
I think that centers are the best teaching technique to teach a lesson or skill to any students of any age of any grade. As for me being an Early Childhood Education major, my students will be these naturally excited students willing to learn. Most young children want to help and be interactive and learning centers allow these type of students to do just that. With learning centers, the centers allow these students to be able to ask questions, experiment, and grow from being in a group. These students are allowed to see other student’s point of view and learn from other perspectives. These students learn from not only their peers, but from us as teachers since we are the standbys just guiding them through the process. Centers force these students to be interactive and face what they within these centers and give them a real experience. Centers allow the time frame to be endless and completely hands on. I know for my classroom I will use these centers to allow my students to learn a subject and have multiple activities for my students to learn. I believe when the students are able to be active and engage themselves within an activity, it allows them to learn and attain more material. Especially for young children that I plan to teach, their learning style is through simple experience and self-exploration. For instance, if I was teaching a math lesson on counting and units, I could use unit blocks. This will also teach them basic calculations and combinations. Not only will my students be able to learn a lesson through the centers, they will also learn other skills that are not necessarily taught by a standard. They can learn how to be a leader, cooperation with others, sharing ideas and seeing other point of views, time managemen...
When building a classroom, the indoor learning environment will be influenced by the building and play area that surrounds the building. A classroom needs to have adequate space for children to play, explore and learn. Children need to have continuous access to water, bathrooms and a sink for handwashing. Although each room or center will be different they need to maintain areas that are easily and safely supervised from all areas of the classroom. The space needs to be organized into learning centers with well-defined areas. Areas such as science, art, sensory, bathrooms and eating areas need to be near a water source. Other areas such as block areas, library and housekeeping should be kept in areas with large area rugs or carpet.
The class I visited is comprised of 24 five and six year old children, a lead teacher and a ‘Para-Pro” who assists the teacher and provides support and guidance for the children. Within the classroom itself, there are 6 tables organized in the center of the room in a grid formation. Children have their own workspace at a shared table. Around the perimeter of the room are ‘centers’ where each day, the children work on tasks such as listening, story development, gross and fine motor skills, math, reading and other important skills that are needed to develop socially and academically. In several places on the walls, there are displays or ‘brag boards’ where children can post their work that they feel best represents their efforts. The walls are brightly decorated and are filled with pictures, letters, numbers and other basic elementary school information. It is energizing and interesting without being chaotic or overstimulating.
