Backhand and Forehand Skill Analysis in Elite Tennis Athletes

Abstract

The purpose of our study is to analyze the backhand and forehand skill between winning and losing elite tennis players. This comparative study uses a sample of two professional tennis athletes, both males and can be assumed that they are at their prime years. The instrument used in the study is a match analysis of the samples’ match performance during the US Open Semi-finals in 2015. The researchers will use it to determine, which is more commonly used by the winning or losing side in a match, if it’s the backhand or forehand swing skill. A further limitation arises from the different tournaments, which uses different surfaces such as clay or grass courts that can induce surface effect on rallies (O’Donoghue and Ingram, 2001). Analyzing more matches, finding more samples (via random sampling) and including other skills, which are also used by elite athletes in sporting events, can further improve this study.
