The memoir Alone in the Storm, written by Leslie Vertes, emphasizes his life in Ajak, Hungary, raised by an abusive and distant father, Alexander, and mother, Ilona, being only fifteen years old when the Nazis invaded Poland and robbed him from his youth. The history of anti-Semitism in his home country, Hungary, was heartbreaking and deeply rooted. When Leslie’s father was out of work, his family lost everything; as a result, they had to sell all their belongings to get by and moved to Budapest in search of a new beginning. His sense of home was disrupted due to his family moving numerous times; he describes his year in Budapest as feeling foreign. With his father’s alleged passing, his mother has left no reason to stay in Hungary, and she fled to a refugee camp in Germany as they waited for U.S visas. With no knowledge of where his mother and sister were, he then went to his former fiancee Ibolya’s home, in hopes of reuniting with his love. However, her mother and aunt answered the door with the terrible news. Gaining the knowledge of the death of so many loved ones, he felt he had nowhere to go, nothing to do and nobody waiting for him. While staying with Ibolya’s mother, Kati, his father, whom he had not seen for five years ordered Leslie to come home with him. His mother would write him every week, trying to convince him to leave Hungary, but leaving the country was becoming more expensive. He was in and out of living with his father, while he was looking for a place to stay. As he was starting work at a private shoe factory, he met Geza, a mentor who helped him secure a job at LeatherTex in Budapest. This job leads to a series of fortunate events for Leslie. His co-worker Judith introduced him to her friend Vera, who soon became the love of his life and mother of their son, George. His parents blamed each other for difficulties in their marriage and decided to get divorced. His father remarried and grew to become supportive and to care for his grandson. His mother and sister realized Leslie could not join them and moved to Israel. After many trials and errors, they fled and moved to Montreal, Canada.
