Texas State Report You take a deep breath as you smell the sweet fluffy cotton candy...where are you? You open your eyes and you see children laughing on a Ferris wheel, and a big sign that says “Welcome to Texas’ State Fair!” You know many surprises are waiting ahead. Suddenly you see a broken sign about a past event on September 1900 something tragic happened. Some important people had died in that very sad tragic event. You feel bad and bump into a man saying welcome to the Lone Star State! You think to yourself “What is the Lone Star State?”…. Well go to Six Flags; Over Texas with breathtaking rides and extraordinary service where you or your child and family can have the time of their lives! Or maybe amusement parks are not for you, maybe you like relaxation and fun on the water! Well go to Padre Island where the water…. surfs you!! The fun begins when you the beautiful sea creatures (especially the turtles) roaming around! Maybe you can surf on the water! As the waves roll over you, you can smell the salty water. What happened you ask… Well everyone knows a huge storm is a scary thing, well it was very scary for many people who lived in Texas. Have you heard of the Great Galveston Storm? Well in Texas The Great Galveston came to hover over Texas. About 6,000-8,000 have had their funeral held at their broken down homes, where tears dropped to the ground feeding the dry, cracked road. Government knew that that storm was the biggest in history. It is now known as the biggest storm in history. It may not be the biggest in the world, but it sure is the biggest in Texas and California. After this big tragic event, weird laws and fun facts have popped up everywhere to cheer up depressed
When we see Texas, we remember today mainly for its BBQ, Football and Black Gold, Texas tea. However, there is much more than just the usual itineraries that we find in most other states as well. Molly Ivins in her essay “Is Texas America” categorically states that, “Here's the deal on Texas. It's big. So big there's about five distinct and different places here, separated from one another geologically, topographically, botanically, ethnically, culturally and climatically” (Ivins). This is a true belief from Molly Ivins of how huge Texas was and how the demographics changed in each geographical location in Texas. The population of Texas and the demographics are two essential factors that include many important parameters in deciding the history of any state. Texas is a unique place with a colorful history of legendary cowboys and tall tales. The state stretches over the middle section of the southern United States. Texas has experienced shifts in governmental control within the United States. French, Spanish, Mexican, and Confederacy, and all having once been in charge, not to mention the time Texas spent as an independent republic. Texas has had many battles and wars within its borders, resulting in seven different constitutions within a span of fifty years between each document.
The expansion of agriculture and railroads helped form Texas’s present economy. The invention of the steam engine not only allowed people to move across the country in 7 days, instead of 6 months, but it also allowed crops and livestock to be carried to markets and places where they would be sold anywhere in the country. They could be moved to another farm in Texas as well. Since it’s such a large state, railroads were a necessity for travel, and general transportation. The railroad-building boom lasted 40 years. The production of cotton in Texas introduced some of the first slave-based cotton farms, and was the dominant crop for a very long time. After this event, Texas’s economy was forever changed.
The Texas Legislature is far too archaic to provide consistent leadership for a state government; Congress has become too enmeshed with the executive branch and leaves blurry lines drawn in its separation of powers. The ideal legislature would be a modernized version of what the Texas Constitution created.
The “White City” was a vast collection of architecture and arts that were put on display in the year 1893. The Chicago World Fair, also called the “White City”, was a major event in American history that impacted America’s culture, economic, and industry. The Chicago World Fair was held to honor Columbus’ discovery of the New World. The real reason why it was made was to proudly have back their wealth and power. Larson said, “the tower not only assured the eternal fame of its designer, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel but also offered graphic proof that France had edged out the United States for dominance in the realm of iron and steel…”(15). Hurricane Harvey was one of the most devastating hurricanes to strike the United States in several years. Harvey resulted in over eighty fatalities and over 150 billion dollars in damages. This proves to be one of the most destructive hurricanes to be recorded. The overwhelming damage was caused by many different aspects; however, three of the greatest aspects are: varying weather patterns throughout the storm, the city structure of Houston, Texas, and the lack of evacuation. Each of these factors affected the city in a different way, but all resulted in a common outcome, devastation.
The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was a natural disaster that left the people of Galveston with an unimaginable and terrifying experience,various personal stories, and a massive cleanup job that led to building the sea wall and raising the elevation of the city. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was the biggest natural disaster in American history. When it came there was little warning and once the citizens were warned it was too late to leave. The waves and rain from the hurricane flooded the whole city over fifteen feet high with water. During the storm people experienced many events that would change their lives. Everyone who survived this hurricane had a story, a story that could be tragic, happy, or full of stress. Once the storm was over there was an immense amount of debris that needed to be cleaned up. The people of Galveston had to look for bodies and people who were buried alive. Galveston had to rebuild everything and start all over. The people living there came up with an idea to build a seawall that would protect Galveston from large waves created by another hurricane. They then also raised the city by as much as 17 feet in some areas.
On August 29, 2005, the third strongest and biggest hurricane ever recorded in American history hit the Gulf Coast at eight o’clock a.m. The interaction between a tropical depression and a tropical wave created a tropical storm later referred to as Hurricane Katrina (FAQS, 2013). Forming over the Bahamas, Hurricane Katrina gradually strengthened as it moved closer and closer to the Gulf of Mexico. Recorded on August 28th, 2005, Katrina jumped from a category three storm to a category five storm with maximum sustained winds up to 160 miles per hour. Although other hurricanes, such as Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma, exceeded Katrina, this dominant storm was classified as the fourth most intense hurricane based its pressure capacity. Once Hurricane Katrina hit land, it was pronounced as a category four storm moving slowly. While people thought that the slow speed of this storm prevented trauma, records show that Katrina did more damage than any fast-moving storm could have ever achieved (Solanki, 2013). Katrina produced abundant debris. The debris was in such large quantity that if it was stacked together on a football field, the rubble would reach the elevation of ten and a half miles. The size of Katrina also caused 90,000 square miles to be affected. Once proclaimed a category three storm, Hurricane Katrina slowed to the speed of 155 miles per hour. At this point in time, Katrina proved to be the sixth most prevailing hurricane traced in history. (Solanki, 2013). `The Minnesota State Fair is the second largest state fair in total attendance next to the Texas State Fair. Personally I have attended the wonderful Minnesota State Fair for 5 years now. Minnesota is a great place to live, because there are 4 seasons in a year, has the Minnesota State Fair and has winter activities.
Have you ever been to Texas? I have been once. My trip to Texas was unbelievably awesome. I saw many of things on my way there. While we were there, I had loads of fun. Many things happened while we were there. Texas was the coolest place I have ever been.
The Six Flags “History” website (2011) states throngs flocked to Six Flags over Texas when the park opened in 1961. Six themed sections, modeled after the culture of the six countries whose flags flew over Texas during the state’s colorful history, created a spectacular and magical setting for guests – and provided the park’s name. The inventive theming afforded guests a chance to experience places and times that previously only existed in their imaginations, including cowboy culture, French and Spanish cultures, and even southern belles and pirates. About a week later a tornado razed a better part of North Houston. It brought rain. It brought hail. It upended cars; it flooded houses. And in its trail it left fallen branches and trees, and removed, in whole, one tiny tomato-onion-potato-and-green-bean garden located behind my garage.
Every year many natural disasters happen around the world. In New Orleans, and several other states, a devastating hurricane struck. High speed winds and major flooding caused many people to lose their homes and even their lives. Many people have heard of hurricane Katrina, but not everybody knows what caused it and the affect it had on the United States.
Many people participate in the State Fair every year regardless of age, but for some this is their way of life. Waking up early in the mornings to feed your animals, fitting them for the show, waiting for your chance to show off how great your animal is no matter what the judge says, and then shaking the hand of the judge when they select your animal for Grand/Reserve Champion. This may be short lived for some, but people like me who show at fairs and then go on to the State Fair learned this is a daunting task to make sure your animals are happy, and are also show ready before you walk into the arena.
