The American Party was a secret society that was against foreigners and Catholics. It was commonly referred to as the Know-Nothing movement or the American Order. People joined the party, because they did not like the anti-slavery views that other parties shared. The American party became popular in Texas around the mid-1850s. The leaders of the American party started a scheme to undermine the popularity and power of the democratic part, and gain political power for themselves. They secretly gained control of democratic leaders. Some of the popular leaders were John S. Ford, a chairman of the state Democratic committee, and the Lieutenant Governor David C. Dickson. I believe this because the two largest candidates are sort of xenophobic. The first and most popular candidate I will be talking about is Donald Trump. Donald Trump is very xenophobic he wants to ban all Muslim travel to the US and wants to keep immigration low. Donald Trump beliefs resemble the American Party, except for keeping slaves. Trump has a belief where because this is America we should speak English. This is similar to the American Party, because they wanted to keep our values American. Also, some of his views are because of the economy. He wants to keep Mexicans out because he thinks that they steal jobs away from Americans. Whether or not this is true it resembles the American Party. Ted Cruz is similar, but is much less Xenophobic. He is similar with Trump because he wants to keep Mexican immigration at a low, but Cruz does not want to eliminate immigration entirely. Ted Cruz’s reasons behind this are economical ones, like the American Party. I am not trying to say that these candidates would support the American Party it is just that their reasoning behind their actions are the same as the American
