Allegory Of Religion In The Film 'The Truman Show'

To me this film is an allegory for religion because Christof plays the role of a god to Truman, he is omnipresent, and controlling his life. In a similar way, God controls our lives and knows what is best for us. . For the majority of the film, we can see different examples of how much control Christof has over Truman, and how little control he has over himself. The harmful control delivered at the hands of Christof reflects the grip Satan can have on people.

The predictable film, The Truman Show stars Truman Burbank, played by Jim Carrey, who, as a baby, was adopted by a film company to be the star in his own life. Unlike reality tv now, Christof had complete control over the weather, and he could change it with very little notice, and he does this multiple times over the course of the film. The first time that we see Christof change the weather is when he wants to fake Truman’s father's death by drowning. He brings up wind, rain, thunder, and lighting to cause Truman’s father to fall overboard. The second time is once Truman makes the decision to escape from the dystopia that he is living in. Christof decides to make the sun rise early so that it would be easier to find Truman, even though it was not technically morning yet. The last example of Christof changing the weather, is when they discover Truman on the water in a sailboat, Christof decides to force a localized storm on Truman so that he would return to Seahaven. However, when Truman shows no signs of surrender, Christof decides to make the storm worse to the point where it could kill Truman, but as determined as he was, Truman survived to ultimately make the decision to leave Seahaven and leave the life of being extremely controlled in a utopia turned dystopia. Everyone desires freedom, and desires to be able to lead their own lives. Ralph Ellison said : “Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat.” This displays the desire for freedom that society craves. Freedom can be defined as the act of liberty, or leading your life without confinement. Truman lives an opposite life, he is constrained in a world without the opportunities to lead the life that he longs for. Certain people of society feel that the government does not provide citizens with the freedom that they desire to lead the life that they believe they should have. They want to be under less governmental control so they can do whatever they want. Society is in constant demand for new laws and regulations to allow people to do what they wish. When people hear the word control they automatically think restriction and feel that they no longer have the choice to live their life they way they want
