Late Adulthood and Death Examine ageism/stereotype When you consider ageism, you think about people being labeled as other 's sees fit. It 's just another term to judge or deny people of their humanity. When you think about people in their late adulthood what comes to mind? Some may think about gray hair, saggy skin, dentures, and a wheelchair. So my question is why? According to (Palmore, 2005, p. 90) “Ageism is a social disease, much like racism and sexism” in that it considers people as part of a category and not as individuals, creating “needless fear, waste, illness, and misery.” The more people grow and develop, they will learn that aging must go on. Individuals that understand and accepts that aging is natural are more accepting versus those that lives in denial. As adults approach the end of their lives, some are faced with decisions that concern living arrangements, care options and creating wills. Those that see their life as meaningful isn’t as focus on death in comparison to those that are. According to Erickson theory, he believes that older adults deal with integrity and despair. You have some individuals that reflect on past achievements while others only look at their mistakes and failures. Erickson had a theory that requires mind over matter. In fact, those that are triggered by the loss of a spouse or facing terminal illness are ones that deal with despair Human and Growth, development in late adulthood As long as people are aging, older adults will depend on love ones to support and meet their needs. According to Maslow theory, he believed that all individuals need to feel secure in their emotions, intellect, and in their daily walk through life. In (1943) Maslow noted that people are motivated to achieve certain needs based on the level of their desire. However, Erickson taught on individuals facing their issues ahead of time.
