It takes periods of adversity to find out just what kind of people we are. Adversity helps determine one’s capabilities and help them understand success. Elie Wiesel managed to surmount the difficulties of the adversities he faced and managed to rise up and speak of his experiences. The debate team in The Great Debaters survived the troubles they faced in their hometown and managed to win against Harvard and win their debate. Surviving in the hometown where their school and homes were located would of have been troublesome since black people were being hanged by the whites in Texas. Adversity is a key element of achieving success to which a person must face to gain enough self-determination to try and overcome it. Everybody has to face adversity at one point in their lives. Being born into the world where everyone is different and some think they’re superior to others means that one may face many adversities. Learning to deal and overcome adversity is what builds character and resilience. Every challenge that a person face makes them stronger and builds their will to try harder. Elie Wiesel shows that with enough determination, one can raise above the horrors they faced and even make something good out of their adversities. The Wiley College Debate Team proves to a younger audience that despite the adversities you face because of your gender and race, you can accomplish great things which may help future generations. If one just believe in themselves enough, many great things can be accomplished if you keep what you have been through in mind.
