Economic disadvantages are a multifaceted issue that is absolutely unavoidable. The concept of perpetuation of economic disadvantages is simple; one who is born into poverty will be less likely to obtain a high paying job and break from poverty. In order to end this cycle, there must be change in policy. While many of us embrace change there are still many of us who don’t accept it. For many the need to change is fighting poverty. Poverty is obviously an economic issue, yet poverty also affects a person’s socioeconomic status. However, it is very possible that the issue of poverty can be avoided or at the very least aided with a proper education.
There are two distinctive types of poverty. The first being absolute poverty, in which one is financially incapable of affording necessities for survival. In the other type of poverty, a person is incapable of living to the standard relative to their community. Clearly, both are devastating to a person’s life and can set limitations to an individual’s goal. When a student faces absolute poverty, they might have to take a job during the school year to help provide for their family, which takes time and attention away from their academic performance. Another possible scenario is that the students’ parents might take multiple jobs and work many hours, meaning that they are unable to help their child with schoolwork. A parent working long hours also affects a student who has younger siblings because that student might have to then take on some responsibilities of raising their siblings.
Meanwhile, a child who is in poverty relative to their community also faces economic disadvantages. This student’s family might live in a decent community, and be unable to afford to send thei...

...g Affirmative Action is whether or not it is ‘fair’ to have a university accept or a job offered to an applicant based on race rather than credentials. Another potential problem with Affirmative Action is that a student who is accepted to a school because of Affirmative Action may not be able to keep up with schoolwork, like an employee might not be able to maintain their job based on productivity.
Economic disadvantages are a constant problem in society that cannot be ignored. People born into poverty face a disadvantage in education and employment, which then leads to a perpetuation of poverty. This cycle requires many changes to be eliminated. Both financial aids and affirmative action can help students overcome poverty and earn a college degree and a high paying job. Conversely, both come with controversy and potentially could continue the cycle of poverty.
