True equality does not focus on racial backgrounds when determining the eligibility of possible college-bound students. Affirmative action decelerates the journey toward equality in America. Its effectiveness in the past has transformed into an insensitivity and irrelevance that harms society as a whole. To achieve fairness in the college admissions system, affirmative action must be stopped.
However, the desire for this diversity does not necessarily result in a rewarding environment; rather colleges do so to use this overall outlook of the school to appeal to others. Therefore this intent draws more to benefit the school rather than students. Having a diverse school filled with students who lack the requirement and knowledge won’t contribute to serve for an effective educational system, but rather create a situation where the student will lag behind in class and drop out of college. Admission officers are trying to create equality by using inequality. In the end, it comes down to a waste.

Such an idea is absurd because even if a student or potential employee takes the institution to court, it is unlikely that he or she could win without policies like affirmative action. This can be attributed to the fact that institutional racism is hard to quantify without specific evidence. My thoughts are aided in a study, minorities were seen to have scored drastically lower on standardized test when applying to college, but still graduated from the same universities with slightly lower GPAs (Crosby, 101) After carefully thinking about the subject, my theory on the concept of affirmative action as a necessary evil. Though it directly uses race and discrimination in order to preference or discard a certain kind of individual, it prevails in giving opportunity to minorities to better themselves.
Benefits of Affirmative Action Programs The purpose behind affirmative action programs during the admissions process of universities is to promote equal opportunity, and to further desegregate our educational system. Those who do not promote affirmative action feel that these programs instill reverse discrimination, as well as segregation in the universities. They believe that these special programs lower the test scores of prestigious universities while also setting up minorities to fail in the real world. Groups against affirmative action feel that the need for these programs have over grown their usefulness, because of the changing times in which we live in. On the contrary because of past discrimination and segregation affirmative action programs are needed during the admissions process of universities and colleges.
Affirmative action is just because it gives a fair advantage to black Americans, women and other minorities who have suffered from the effects of social injustice in our country. Majorities have constantly opposed affirmative action because they view it as an injustice directed to them. In Grutter v Bollinger, one can say that affirmative action is just because it is a benign discrimination. One might say that the law school?s consideration of African Americans, Hispanics and Native American student?s (who otherwise might not be represented in the student body) is unjust. However, considering the facts of the case, the school?s policy does not define diversity solely in terms of racial and ethnic status and does not restrict the types of diversity contributions eligible for ?substantial weight.?
However, affirmative action has become a system of racial quotas that lowers standards for minority applicants in order to give them a chance to succeed in universities, jobs, and leadership positions. At first, it may not seem like such a bad idea to have racial quotas because it increases diversity. But with racial quotas qualified applicants to universities, jobs, etc aren’t allowed to receive the position they are qualified for because of the quotas based on race. Affirmative action contradicts itself, by saying that racial discrimination is wrong and we should all have equal opportunities in a color-blind society but then gives opportunities solely based on race. Affirmative action is unethical and this idea is supported by moral philosophy subjects such as Kantianism, Utilitarianism, Social Contract, and Virtue Theory.
It also is demeaning to minorities who want to be judged by their actions, not their skin color. When companies are hiring or promoting, or when a college decides which applicants to accept, many are unable to judge by merit alone. They are required by law to make race a deciding factor in their decisions in order to meet the mandated quotas. Affirmative action is also demeaning to most minorities. It makes them feel as though the government views them as having less ability than others.
Affirmative action allowed minorities a fair chance to pursue education and career advancement. It originally was intended for temporary assistance and was supposed to crush existing racially biased ideas in society. What was once a noble and valiant idea in 1965 has taken the very rights away it was intended to give. As affirmative action was introduced, many industries found the need to reduce standards in order to accept minorities. In many colleges and universities, a certain number of openings were set aside specifically for minorities because of the necessity to fill the racial quota for college populations.
The evidence supports the fact that if racial preferences are not used in admissions, the country will be withholding quality educations, both graduate and undergraduate, from large numbers of minority students. One of the staples of slavery when it is employed in this world is preventing those who are enslaved from becoming educated. We must work for the advancement of the human race as a whole, and this includes making sure that entire races of people are not left off prematurely on the road of education.
