Yet there are those who believe that some revolutionary innovations have actually hindered humankind more than helped. However, these pessimist are faulty since even mistakes made in the technological world have still led to unexpected breakthroughs and in turn their positive effects outweigh their negative ones. Cures to diseases, early detection and single incision surgery are among the many life saving advancements made possible by technology. Some fear that the rapid evolution of technology, especially in the workforce, will become too much and there will no longer be a need for human labor at all. This seemingly irrational fear of robots and other futuristic developments is as obscure as one may think. Progress in engineering has allowed for robots, drones, and even self driving cars to soon become a thing of the present. Amazon has already tested the use of drones for shipping purposes was successful in doing so. Amazon has also made advancements in other aspects of consumerism as well, specifically in their new checkout free grocery store called Amazon Go. These stores will be completely checkout free which means no need to wait on line and no need for cashiers. As their trial stores has recently released panic has been spreading throughout the globe. If this works out will there no longer be a need for cashiers in grocery stores? or no need for cashiers at all? Some fast food chains have already eliminated cashiers completely and now just have simple touch screen menu options, which has been tremendously profitable. The robots are taking over!!! This is the idea that Kevin Kelly stresses and elaborates on in his article “Better than Human:Why Robots Will-and must-Take Our Jobs”. The article focuses on automation in the workplace and how most of the jobs that are currently done by humans will be taken over by robots in the future. Kelly believes that this is inevitable and that it is a positive thing. While I believe that most of our jobs will be taken over in the future, I do not think that Kelly did a great job at trying to prove his point and his argument was mediocre.
Imagine a world where you couldn’t connect to your family and friends immediately through a phone call or text message, but instead had to send them a letter that could take weeks, or even months until they received it. Imagine a world where if you needed to look something up you had to walk to the library and look it up in a book, instead of going onto the internet. Imagine a world with no televisions, and only radios. Imagine a world where only the rich had cars, and everyone else had to walk everywhere. This is what life was like in the 1900’s, and why I believe that technology is the greatest advancement since then.
In the current economy, there is no surprise for anxiety over whether employees will lose their jobs or not. Due to an increase of research and use for automation and machine learning, more and more workers are starting to antagonize new technology. In the research paper ‘Where have all the jobs gone?’ by well-known journalist Daniel Akst, the automation anxiety is not completely false, but it only focuses on one side; “Unemployment has been concentrating among those with little education or skill, while employment has been rising most rapidly in occupations generally considered to be the most skilled and require the most amount of education” (Akst). The rise of automation will mean a depletion of lower skilled jobs, which will cause an increase in education requirements to encourage more people to take up college and further education due to the introduction of more computer based jobs. Automation in the manufacturing business will have a positive effect; products can come out efficiently, quickly, accurately, and with lower costs. Machines are made to calculate, capture and store images. Machines are also made to help make individual's lives easier and more efficient. For instance, we are able to keep records of our financial transactions through computers. Also, we are now able to communicate to other individuals from different countries because of technology. As technology advances, some individuals are considering machines to have qualities like human beings, such as a conscious and the structure of the human body. However, can machines really have a conscious like humans? Similarly, Alan Turing and John Searle both debated whether machines have a conscious or not.
