For decades drugs have been an on going issue around the world. They tear homes and families apart, while the users live in constant fear of when they are going to receive their next fix. Many people turn their heads to this matter,but others are curious and want to learn more as to why people become fix-aided on something so terrible. On man in particular whom was curious on this matter is Sam Quinones. He is a journalist who studied the reasoning 's as to why people choose to either sell, intake, or prescribe drugs in their life time. In his book Dreamland, Quinones mentions various states a crossed the United States and Mexico and how their issues with drugs are becoming worse over the years. People living in Portsmouth Ohio is 1929 considered it the heartland of America. Dreamland was a swim club the size of a football field located on the Ohio River where the town went to spend their hot summer days. Quinones portrayed Dreamland as a fairy-tale All-American city. There are many different reasons as to why Portsmouth started to fall apart. Some believed it was the flood in 1937, and others believed it was the 1970 's. During this time, the city took a hit when they were unprepared for globalization, competition, and cheaper labor. During the 1980 's many families left the city of Portsmouth and moved to various other cities such as; Columbus, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Austin. When families began to leave, there was only a small amount of educated people left. Many people who stayed in town either worked in schools, hospitals, or factories. With little to fall back on at times many people had a hard time keeping their jobs. Many people were applying for disability and works ' compensation. This was seen as an opportunity for Dr. David Procter to make some money
