As we all know, to succeed in school, college, or any other form of education results from a student’s complete understanding and effort of the material. According to Katz, academic integrity is defined as following a code of moral values, prizing, honesty and fairness in all aspects of academic life – classes, assignments, tests, papers, projects, and relationships with students and faculty (2009, p. 82) It is the foundation for responsible conduct of a student’s educational life. Trying to complete more than one or two assignments in a day can be somewhat of an issue. Some students, including myself, do run into this issue and it can be very difficult to manage. Where time management comes into play, student’s (especially freshman) skills may not be up to par so they automatically go to breaking that academic integrity rule. Once they feel as though they can’t do it, they “cheat,” by getting the answers for the assignment from someone else, copying everything from someone else’s work, etc. Cheating happens most in the occasion where the student is involved in sports as well. Loschiavo (2015) found, “College work is challenging, and some students underestimate how long it will take them. When they run out of time, they panic and take a shortcut” (para. 21). Just as with a student who receives poor grades participates in the act of cheating, a student who gets excellent grades will cheat as well. When it comes down to GPA and grades, of course students are determined to keep them high and acceptable. Some students are pressured to keep their grades up or just get good grades period so they depend on cheating. That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
College students face a variety of pressures and have a variety of motives that lead to intentional Plagiarism and unknowing or unintentional acts of Plagiarism. Most students plagiarize because they are overwhelmed. Writing assignments require a lot of time and a long thought process which may be a reason students feel overwhelmed at times.
Some students are bombarded with assignments and tests which are sometimes due in short period of times. I have recently interviewed a friend of mines, second-year medical students at the University of West Indies Mona, who said the workload is heavy but manageable once you organize yourself properly. But of course, this is his opinion, to others, it may not be that easy. We asked him, “Have you ever cheated?” To this day, the answer is yet to come. I decided to interview a family member this time, a Lawyer, who graduated from two prestigious universities, Stanford University and Harvard University. She remembered the workload she faced while studying, the stress it brought. She admitted to cheating on two tests in her university life and regret that she ever did. She further went on and said cheating is a choice, no matter the situation you should work hard and accept the grade you get because that is what you worked for. With the workload being too heavy, some students would only work towards the requirement needed to pass the class other that trying to completely understand the lesson being taught. First, the temptation of being able to take just a few lines from the Internet can be convincing. Second, achieving better grades, Students will tend to cheat in various ways to give themselves a boost grade in a class. Third, work load and pressure, Students will turn to cheating to lighten the homework load which often takes many hours to complete. According to Dan Ariely, people tend to cheat if they justify their reason to do so, or when they are surrounded by people who also cheat. In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Moreover, institutions of higher learning should deal with all reported cases of academic dishonestly severely to deter others. In addition, a culture of academic integrity should be promoted. Examples of cheating include but are not limited to copying from another’s work or assignment, handing in another person’s schoolwork, assisting another student in his/her efforts to cheat; also, the use of or possession of unauthorized materials- including the possession of exams, or the use of aides during testing; or the facilitation of cheating, i.e. disclosing test questions, sharing graded writings, etc.
Overachieving students commit countless amounts of hours towards studying for tests or completing assignments. Students feel that with the substantial amount of dedication they put towards their success, they should be rewarded with the desired outcome—good grades. Some students would do anything to achieve these good grades even if it was unethical; it is this mindset that has let to countless amounts of students to turn to cheating to obtain the grades on assignments they worked on
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Without academic integrity, learning can never be assured. Honesty is not fixated, and changes by situation. Everyone should strive for academic honesty or integrity. By trying your hardest and receiving what you deserve, you will go farther than anyone else in life.
The first cause as to why students cheat is because they are lazy. It happens all the time, where students go home from school, have a snack, watch television, take a nap, play some video games, and just keep saying that they will do their homework later. The next thing they know it eleven o’clock at night and time to go to bed, but no homework was accomplished. The student keeps pushing back the assignment until the last minute and the last minute is not enough time. This is also known as procrastination. The student does not want to fail, but they were too lazy to do their own work, so they ask to copy the work from a friend that did the work. I once said something to a guy about how this was cheating and he told me that he was, “using his resources wisely”. Another time I asked a student next to me to stop copying my answers in class and he told, “Then you shouldn’t let me see your answers”, he blamed his cheating on me. Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often.
