The Quilotoa Volcano (3,900 meters), located in the province of Cotopaxi, Zumbahua Parish is part of the Ecological Reserve Iliniza. Its name comes from two Quechua words "Quiru" which means tooth and "toa" meaning queen because of the shape of the lagoon, as it has almost elliptical shape of about 3.15 kilometers in diameter and a difference of 440 meters between the level water and the upper edge. The crater rim ends in the southwest side door with Huyantic or Zhalaló summit is 4,010 meters.

The lake in the crater of the Quilotoa, is located in the circuit known as the Quilotoa, and is just 14 kilometers below the village of Zumbahua. Mount Tambora, located on the Island of Sumbawa, Indonesia is classified as a Stratovolcano. Also known as a composite volcano, Tambora is a tall conical volcano (cone like structure) where layers of the walls are built by hardened lava and volcanic ash. The term composite is used to describe the volcano due to the composite layered structure built from sequential outpourings of eruptive materials1. Among the most common types of volcanoes, Tambora also shares its destructive prowess with best-known volcanoes such as Krakota (1883) and Vesuvius (79 A.D). The Island of Sumbawa is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain (a group of islands in the southern Maritime Southeast Asia) and is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara3. A map of Mount Tambora is shown in Figure 1 to provide a better perspective of its location. Interestingly enough, Tambora forms its own peninsula on Sumbawa, known as the Sanggar Peninsula. In April of 1815, after years of dormancy, Mount Tambora erupted with great intensity, approximately 7 on the volcanic explosivity index, which is shown in Figure 2. It has been estimated that the eject volume of Tambora was 160 cubic kilometres, which represents the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The death toll has been projected to be at least 71,000 people, of who over 15% were killed directly from the eruption1. The remaining 75% have been thought to succumb to starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout decimated the agricultural industry in the region. Following the eruption, a volcanic winter ensued. Mauna Loa is Earth’s largest volcano and most massive mountain as it takes up nearly half of the flourishing landscape of the island of Hawai’i. This island is actually made up of five volcanoes, Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea, all in such close proximity that they fused together to form one whole island. Mauna Loa is located in the south central area of Hawai’i, in the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and its coordinates are 19°5' N, 155°6' W. It is 13,680 ft above sea level, but if one measures from its true base on the ocean floor, it is estimated to be 30,080 feet tall. Its name is quite fitting as it means “Tall Mountain”.
Mauna Loa is a shield volcano. Mauna Loa, “is a gently sloping mountain produced from a large number of generally very fluid lava flows” (Mauna Loa Volcano). Also an elevation map can show how high and wide the volcano is. According to Britannica, Mauna Loa is 64 miles (103 km) wide. As a result, this can be seen on an elevation map because, one can see how far it goes down. Mauna Loa is the largest gently sloping mountain in the world.
Boiling Lake is one of the most popular attractions in MorneTrois Pitons National Park. This eerie-looking pool of bubbling, gray-green water lies at the end of a strenuous, three-hour hike through thick forest. But it's worth it. Geologists believe the 63-meter-wide actively boiling lake, the world's second largest, is a flooded fumarole, a crack in the earth allowing hot gases to vent from the molten lava below. Lassen Volcanic National Park is often overlooked by tourists because its proximity to the Famous Yosemite which lies close by. Located in Northeastern California, Lassen Volcanic National Park is primarily known for its numerous hydrothermal features. Lassen Peak is the highest elevation point in the park and was formed around 30,000 years ago when Tehama’s Northern flank formed a dome before a large eruption (National Parks Conservation Association, 2009). Beautiful features blooming within the park are degraded by adjacent land surrounding the park which is used for logging, grazing, and off-roading. These activities often impact the parks vegetation, wildlife and other features. Also, the implications of no fire suppression are causing a stress on the forests in Lassen and accumulating more fuel increasing the likelihood of a severe fire. All these issues and more are becoming more apparent over time.
