As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime. As senior class president I get to participate in the leadership class. Being in leadership allows me to work with other students that are involved in the student body in working to help our school and community. In leadership we play a big part in planning school events throughout the year. Last summer I volunteered at a local hospital for a total of 136 hours. At the end of the summer I received an honorable mention award for being a dedicated volunteer who is highly respected around the hospital. Furthermore, I've been a committed volunteer during this school year. I have also been an active member of my school's HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) chapter; this March I will be competing in a medical terminology competition against members of other HOSA chapters across the state. Additionally, I am a devoted member of my school's academic decathlon team. Finally, I have been a member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) for the past two years.
Throughout high school I have dreamed of having the opportunity to attend Indiana University. I have a true passion for babies. I love to learn how babies are developed and how they become such an amazing part of the world. Therefore, I would like to apply to Indiana University and pursue a degree in Pediatric Nursing. I would love to be able to deliver babies and deliver new life into this earth. There are several opportunities available for me to get involved with new leadership opportunities. A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. Involvement in marching band, field hockey, and various other activities has given me many opportunities to show leadership. My first leadership opportunity was in eighth grade when I became a WEB leader. While I was a WEB leader, I helped incoming sixth graders get adjusted to middle school life and find their classes on the first day. I also met up with the sixth graders in my group once a month at lunch and got to know them while I asked how school was going and helped them with any issues they had. In marching band, this past season I was a marching captain for my section. I helped the freshmen learn to march, demonstrated proper marching techniques for others, and gave advice to anyone having trouble with part of our marching show. I’ve always been the type of person that truly enjoys athletics and have participated in nearly all sports offered to me. I started playing sports in elementary with club softball and basketball. As I entered my middle and high school years I was able to add the school sanctioned sports to my list of activities. This afforded me the opportunity of competing in volleyball, basketball, golf, track and softball. The camaraderie and life lessons of sports seemed invaluable to me.
From the time I was younger, I always dreamt of becoming a successful doctor. I came to the realization when I stumbled across the discovery channel at the age of seven. It fascinated me how the doctors worked efficiently everyday in hopes of helping people prosper in their lives. At that moment I knew that helping people would become a passion of mine. At a young age, I told myself I will go to medical school and become a medical doctor. It seemed like a simple task in my childish mind. Little did I know that the process would be much more complicated. I want to attend a university where I will be challenged academically and become independent in my studies. As well as being motivated to become the best version of myself. If I attend Rutgers University I will be able to fulfill all of these qualities that I want in my education. There are a number of people who focus solely on their academics and nothing else. While school work is important, extracurricular activities also play an important role in a child’s life. Extracurricular activities offer a wide range of opportunities and benefits. Doing something outside of school helps children to “explore physical, creative, social, political, and career interests with like-minded people.”(Teens Health) When the thought of extracurricular activities is brought up, most people would assume sports such as basketball, soccer, or baseball. Although sports are a part of these activities, not everyone is interested or has the ability to participate in most sporting events and teams. Sports teams are not the only extracurricular activities to choose from, there are also many clubs and groups for people to join and be a part of. Some clubs are put together through the school or outside of school, in the community. For example, Bonneville High School has some of its own clubs such as debate, band, and orchestra. While in the community, kids can participate in 4-H or religious groups. For some people the decision of what activity to do can be a hard choice to make. The goal of the activity is to be fun and enjoyable, someone should think of their interests, how much time they have to devote to an activity, and their abilities. Being in a club or on a team can teach students important lessons they could use as they grow up and leave high school. Some of the lessons I want to focus on in my paper include leadership, teamwork, dedication, and responsibility.
In seventh grade I was able to choose a language to begin studying. I was immediately drawn to studying German and continued to take German through my junior year of high school. I have always enjoyed German and was inducted into the German National Honor Society at the end of my sophomore year of high school. In the summer of 2014 I had the chance to travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland with my German class. This only strengthened my interest in learning more about the German culture.
I believe everyone should use the energy and opportunities they are blessed with every single day to impact everything around them in a positive way. Volunteering is my way of putting this belief into action. I volunteer to make a difference, to utilize my energy for good, and to right the wrongs. The past three years of my life have been absolutely hectic and my community service efforts have helped me through every moment of it.
One of the personal lessons that high school has taught me was that I must know my strengths. Through playing in many tournaments for my high school golf team, it became apparent to me that my strength was not my athletic success; however, through my standardized test scores and my academic performance in my classes, it became clear to me that one of my major strengths was my academic success. Though academic success is important, as high school has taught me, extracurricular success is equally important. Though athletics were not my forte, I was fortunate enough to join multiple clubs and organizations which eventually allowed me to become better connected with both my community and my peers. It was through those clubs and organizations that I learned arguably my most important lesson. That lesson was to set my goals high. Coming into high school, I never would have thought that I would be the main editor of the Kepi Yearbook Staff, the president of Key Club, or a Link Crew commissioner. Being able to go to Mazzuchelli Catholic middle school has been an opportunity that I am truly thankful for. Whether it’s struggling or finding success in areas such as academics, extracurricular activities, or my faith life. Before starting middle school I remember being so scared that I cried that first day, but as soon as I walked through the doors I went to my locker and instantly felt better when I saw one of my friends from elementary school. I definitely had some struggles during middle school, things like being to scared to try something new or not even knowing what I wanted to do. Service has been a struggle for me throughout my middle school years, I had trouble finding service opportunities to get all of my hours done.
I have a passion for learning that exceeds all else in my life. There are so many things that I am interested in, things that I hope will continue to shape and impact my future. Science has not always been an interest of mine, but my love and appreciation for it has grown over the years. I try to push myself and find new avenues to explore in my education. The challenge that sciences pose is so endearing.
