Do you expect life to be perfect? If so, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but it isn't. Life is full of twists, turns, obstacles, and more but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your dreams. Everyone has their own interpretation of the 'American Dream' and some people argue that in this day and age, it is unattainable. I believe the American Dream is often hard to accomplish but it is not impossible. The play written by Lorraine Hansberry, "A Raisin in the Sun", shows how the character Mama Younger struggles to achieve her dream due to many hardships but never gives up hope. The rise of superstar singer, Katy Perry, supports my theory by showing how she went after her dream of doing what she loves and succeeding in the music industry. …show more content…

Mama said "…I came from five generations of people who was slaves and sharecroppers...". She came from nothing but she built a life for herself. Her ancestors were shipped over from Africa and most likely were sold to farmers for money. "...my wife here, she does domestic work in peoples kitchen. So does my mother." Walter said. Mama worked a bad job with bad pay; she wasn’t educated so she never had the opportunity to make more of herself but she didn’t give up. Her dream of providing for her family and being a respected member of society was a struggle for many, many years. In the society she lived in, African Americans were not expected to succeed, especially African American women. In the play, Walter was talking to Benetha about her becoming a doctor and he said "Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you are so crazy 'bout messing 'round with sick people – then go to be a nurse like the other women – or just get married and be quiet..." African women were expected to be sub-par in society. She is one of the biggest names in the music business and is a role model for children and adults all around the world. Katy has released many successful albums and has preformed at one of the biggest events in American sports, the Super Bowl. But she didn’t start her career the easy way. "Not long ago I was playing guitar on the streets of Santa Barbra for maybe twenty bucks a day and an avocado." Katy tweeted this to her fans on a popular social media app called Twitter. Her family didn’t have a successful background in music. She had to work for everything she wanted in her career. Katy stated in an interview that "I started from nothing and I created this world and I made it myself, with my own strength." She didn’t have things handed to her. Katy Perry built the life she wanted through hard work and courage. She depended on herself to become successful. Later in the interview, Katy talked about America and the American Dream. "...What's so beautiful about America is that there is a true freedom in having a dream, working hard for it, and being able to achieve it." In a lot of countries, the citizens aren’t free and they don’t get to decide what they do in life. Here in America, we have the opportunity to be who we want to be and do what we want to do. You can tell she believes that the American Dream is real and it is totally achievable. She is living proof that my statement about the Dream is
