Do you expect life to be perfect? If so, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but it isn't. Life is full of twists, turns, obstacles, and more but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your dreams. Everyone has their own interpretation of the 'American Dream' and some people argue that in this day and age, it is unattainable. I believe the American Dream is often hard to accomplish but it is not impossible. The play written by Lorraine Hansberry, "A Raisin in the Sun", shows how the character Mama Younger struggles to achieve her dream due to many hardships but never gives up hope. Mama said "…I came from five generations of people who was slaves and sharecroppers...". She came from nothing but she built a life for herself. Her ancestors were shipped over from Africa and most likely were sold to farmers for money. "...my wife here, she does domestic work in peoples kitchen. So does my mother." Walter said. Mama worked a bad job with bad pay; she wasn’t educated so she never had the opportunity to make more of herself but she didn’t give up. Her dream of providing for her family and being a respected member of society was a struggle for many, many years. In the society she lived in, African Americans were not expected to succeed, especially African American women. In the play, Walter was talking to Benetha about her becoming a doctor and he said "Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you are so crazy 'bout messing 'round with sick people – then go to be a nurse like the other women – or just get married and be quiet..." African women were expected to be sub-par in society. She is one of the biggest names in the music business and is a role model for children and adults all around the world. Katy has released many successful albums and has preformed at one of the biggest events in American sports, the Super Bowl. But she didn’t start her career the easy way. "Not long ago I was playing guitar on the streets of Santa Barbra for maybe twenty bucks a day and an avocado." Katy tweeted this to her fans on a popular social media app called Twitter. Her family didn’t have a successful background in music. She had to work for everything she wanted in her career. Katy stated in an interview that "I started from nothing and I created this world and I made it myself, with my own strength." She didn’t have things handed to her. Katy Perry built the life she wanted through hard work and courage. She depended on herself to become successful. Later in the interview, Katy talked about America and the American Dream. "...What's so beautiful about America is that there is a true freedom in having a dream, working hard for it, and being able to achieve it." In a lot of countries, the citizens aren’t free and they don’t get to decide what they do in life. Here in America, we have the opportunity to be who we want to be and do what we want to do. A major argument that Lorraine Hansberry makes in her play A Raisin in the Sun is the importance of dreams. Dreams are what each member of the Younger family is driven by. Mama wants to have her own home in a nice part of town; she does not want her children growing up in a place with rats. Walter wants to have a successful business so he can surpass the poverty that has plagued his family. And Beneatha wants to get a good education, become a doctor, and marry a nice man. Dreams are especially important to the Younger family as they come from a poverty laden family and desire to live the “American Dream.” Every member of the Younger family has a dream but each one is different with a different view on what the true “American Dream” really is.

Walter's drive for money consumes him and complicates his relationship with his family while Frederick's passion for reading made him a more intelligent slave. Walter's dreams are to be the head of his family, have a respectable job, and to one day own a liquor store. Throughout the play, he struggles to gain support of his dreams. "Man says to his woman says: I got me a dream. His woman says: Eat your eggs. Man says: Ive got to take hold of this here world, woman will say: Eat your eggs and go to work." (Act.1 Sc.1). Comparing the perspective of the American dream in the 1920’s to the American Dream in the 1940’s and present day seems to be a repeating cycle. The American dream is always evolving and changing. The American dream for present day is similar to the dream of the 1920’s. An Ideal of the American life is to conform to what our society has determined is success. Money, materialism and status had replaced the teachings of our founding fathers in the 1920’s. A return to family values and hard work found its way back into American’s lives in the 1940’s. The same pursuit of that indulgent lifestyle that was popular in the roaring twenty’s has returned today for most Americans, many Americans are living on credit and thinking that money and the accumulation of material items can solve all problems. Through film, literature, art and music, an idealized version of what it means to be an American has changed from money, materialism, and status of the 1920s to hard work and family values of the forties.

Together, both Hansberry and Hughes show the effects on human beings when a long-awaited dream is thwarted by economic and social hardships.
