Truth Behind the American Dream: Is the American Dream only a dream or can it ever be achieved? In the United States, the basic motto is to attend the American Dream. It is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. It does not matter if a person was born into a poor family; he or she has equal opportunities to attain the American Dream. The American Dream basically means success in life with a nice house, a job, knowledge and especially the pursuit of happiness.
First, what is the American dream? According to David Wallechinsky, “the traditional American Dream is based on the belief that hardworking citizens can improve their lives, pay their monthly bills without worry, give their children a start to an even better life, and still save enough to live comfortably after they retire” (1). “The American Dream” states, “It has always represented the possibility for individuals to succeed and live a life of wealth and comfort, made possible by both the political and economic attitudes in the USA and the individual’s own hard work” (1). Daniella Nicole adds that “in years past, chasing the American Dream meant the sky was the limit. . .” (1).

The American Dream is known to be a hope for a better, richer, happier life for all citizens of every class. For almost all Americans, this entails earning a college degree, gaining a good job, buying a house, and starting a family. Although this seems wonderful, a large amount of the American population believes that the Dream has changed immensely because of increased prices in today’s society, the price of tuition being highly unaffordable, as well as the unemployment rate skyrocketing and weaker job growth. Life in America is sweet and it is easy to succeed. America has ample resources to support the growth of its citizens especially young people. This enviable country, The United States, rewards hard work and high achievers are encouraged to chase their dreams. I thought that being here was a big opportunity, that I should take advantage of it. In my family, education comes first, without an education, your chances of succeeding are slim. My mom always told me, "Work hard now and enjoy later," meaning if I put in the work now I will reap the benefits later. Through my upbringing, I gained my own understanding of what the American dream is. To me, the American dream means that one can succeed and reach the highest level of achievement if one puts one’s mind to it. No one is in your way but yourself; you either do what you need to do to be successful or you stay dormant and not accomplish anything in life. Not only do you have to make the first step but you have to be able to stay to hang in there when the going gets tough. The idea of the American dream is very idealistic. There is no absolute way that everyone can achieve their goal with absolute fairness. There are too many complications and issues with the system. One example of these problems is social class. In my opinion social class should not affect anyone’s ideas about where they can go, but this is not the case. People who go to lower income schools are given visibly less options. They are not taught to strive for the highest as I am everyday in each of my classes. They do not have the same supplies or funding that my school has the privilege of having that helps so much. They do not get the push they need from teachers or their peers. The American Dream is so important to our country and especially for our generation to take seriously. The American Dream is the opportunity to reach the goals one sets for themselves. It is about having your dream job and life you have always fantasized about. The dream is also about having freedom and equality. The American Dream was much easier to attain a few decades ago compared to today. However, it is still possible. The economy was better fifty years ago than it is today. People are in greater debt now and the United States is in higher debt than it was fifty years ago. The American Dream is still possible despite the lack of improvement within social mobility in American society over the past years. The American dream is achievable by being able to live a middle-class lifestyle and that lifestyle is obtainable through hard work and perseverance, even in light of obstacles such as racism. “The American Dream is still achievable, however, the good news is that people at the bottom are just as likely to move up the income ladder today as they were 50 years ago” (O’Brien 1). The ability to attain the American Dream is hindered by race, the middle class, and giving up facing adversity.
It is important to know and understand what the American Dream means and not change it to ones own personal goal. This proves to be crucial in Source E when young Americans state that money is what provides opportunity, while it is also the end goal (Pinker). This is proof that the sense of self-advancement has changed and they no longer consider the hard work to be part of the American Dream itself. In fact, they believe that more wealth will contribute to increased happiness due to the possession of more material goods, bringing them respect and attention from their peers. This limits the American Dream to become a bought respect rather than earned. By doing this they are putting power into money and losing sight of putting power into ones ability, which is what the American Dream is truly about. This makes the American Dream appear to be unattainable due to the facts that the claims are being based off an incorrect
The American dream is something very tricky, but when you become truly happy, that is when you know you have achieved your American Dream. All of these examples listed above provide a reason to believe that the American Dream is still going strong today. Every person has a dream or goal they want to achieve and I believe that is what keeps America strong and going. The dreamers keep us alive because they keep new ideas and concepts flowing throughout the country. The dreamers spark new dreams and it is never ending, which keeps the American Dream and the concept of having a dream or end goal alive. “Dreams don’t always have to exist while the sun is down and your eyes are shut” (Alex Gaskarth).
While some people argue that the American Dream is still possible because they’re trying to achieve what they think the American Dream is, others believe that the
“American Dream” is different to each of us and this is due to the fact that each person and person’s thought is different. The American dream is dependent mainly on the setting of where one lives and one‘s social status or education. Like - in the nobel “Death of a Salesman” where shows that how each character has a different thought of the American dreams and how they believed on their dream. People in today still have their own American dream which contains their thoughts and their hope.
The ideas of the American dream is not dead, not by any means, what has died is the notion that anyone can come to america and be successful.
