The american dream is not easy to obtain with many barriers standing in the way of people trying to achieve their american dream. In the novel The Raisin in the Sun and in the short stories In American Society and America and I . It is more difficult to achieve the american dream as an outsider due to social, economic and cultural barriers than those who live on the inside.
The Raisin in the Sun is a prime example of two barriers that the Younger family has to deal with. The family deals with economic and social barriers that make it hard for them to accomplish their american dream. Walter can’t achieve his american dream because of economic barriers with him getting a well paying job. The first barrier the main character face is the cultural barrier. Because she is an immigrant from russia she doesn't speak any english which makes it extremely hard to find work and to understand the new world that is around you (Yezierska). Another barrier that she faces is a social barrier because no one would hire her in the factories. One reason was because she was untrained in working in a factory but another was that americans were mad at immigrants taking american factory jobs and americans formed unions (Yezierska) . This made life hard and made it seem almost impossible for her achieve her american dream because she had to face barriers the outsiders have to deal with that insider don't deal with.
In both American and I and In the American Society and also the novel A Raisin in the Sun. The american dream is much harder to achieve if people are on the outside of a society rather than on the inside of that society.
