What is a Hero? A simple definition defined by Webster’s Dictionary is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. What a hero really is depends on the person who you are asking. A hero to one person, for example, might be their dad for always being there for them when they needed him. A hero to someone else might be a soldier who gave his life so others may live. There is no right or wrong answer or definition. I am going to tell you about a man named Charles Kelly, a soldier in the United States Army. He was given five helicopters and a skeleton crew and he made history. Because of him MEDEVAC is an essential part of Army Aviation. If there are boots on the ground, MEDEVAC will not be far away. He established the “Golden Hour”. The golden hour is the first hour from the time a soldier is wounded. If the soldier receives the next level of care within that hour, his or her chances of survival increase dramatically. And this is still in all MEDEVAC SOP’s today. His flying was unorthodox, his tactics were often times called crazy and insane, but the bottom line upfront is because of his tenacity, bravery, and selflessness, not only did he personally save hundreds of lives in Vietnam, but his tactics have helped save thousands in multiple battles in the years to follow. To this day, United States MEDEVAC is superior to any other militaries medical evacuation unit. Most countries have a 45 minute response time to urgent patients, and will only fly if the conditions are relatively ideal. United States MEDEVAC will be wheels up in 15 minutes or less for an urgent patient. We will fly in any condition, day or night, and in weather as low as 500’ ceilings and 1 mile visibility.
