Symbolism in Hamlet takes the reader on a figurative journey through William Shakespeare 's great tragedy. The purpose of using symbols in literature is to illustrate the unseen conflict with tangible objects. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines symbolism as "the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations." The symbol at work here is poison because although Polonius 's advice is good in itself, he gives his children a hypocrite of a father. He tells Laertes several words of advice, one of them telling Laertes to be true to himself and to others. "This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." (1.3.17) Polonius 's lying actions that he performs later in the play add to the poisoning of Laertes ' mind because if he cannot trust his own father, who can he trust? Polonius then proceeds to tell Ophelia to cut off her relationship with Prince Hamlet. This contributes to the heartbreak that both Ophelia and Hamlet feel, but ultimately leads to the death of Ophelia due to the poison that drove her to insanity.

Toward the end of Act I, power, death, and poison serve as the incentives that command the rest of the play. Hamlet meets his dead father 's ghost who reveals to him that King Claudius poisoned Old Hamlet. Then Prince Hamlet is instructed to seek revenge on Claudius but not his mother, Gertrude.
