Childhood obesity has doubled since the 1970s. our thin obsessed society thinks fat people have no self control, which often isnt the case. (Moon). Being overweight can actually cause eating disorders and servere depression. Seeing thin models flaunting themselves in magazines triggers these kinds of things. Because childhood obesity is a crisis in the United States, society must implement programs to end this epidemic.
Michelle Obama, the first lady, has founded a campaign that she calls “lets move.” Rather than “lets eat less junk food”, she wants the children to learn how to keep themselves healthy. Its goals are crystal clear. Her campaign aims to improve food in schools and eliminate “food desert” areas with access to healthier foods. Michelle is asking professional and buisiness groups to do more to help kids eat better. “we parents, she said, want assurance that food companies will stop teaching kids that its good to have salty, sugary foods and snacks everyday.” ( Nestle).
Weight loss camps all around the world aim to help children, teens, and adults become healthier. Camp Shane is one of the longest running fitness and weight loss camps for kids. Recently, Camp Shane has opened a new location in Georiga. By empowering kids with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices, Camp Shane has helped countless children and teens “re-shape their lives and gain the confidence they deserve.” Children at camp Shane can expect to lose weight, learn how to keep it off, and have a great time doing it. Obesity is one of the most serious health problems, and it has been increasing significantly. The film “Fed Up” attempts to provide an answer to why people become obese: food itself. However, “real food” as solution offered in the film begs the question of feasibility. The film assumes that people in general have time to buy, prepare, and cool “real food” and thus commits the fallacy of contradicting its own theory by suggesting that it’s the people’s fault for not being diligent enough in taking care of their health.
Many would argue that children should not focus on their weight because children should lead a youth with little worries, yet obesity affects a child much more than people with that argument think. Being overweight can cause increased risks for several serious diseases and even can result in decreased mental health on account of low self-esteem and social discrimination. Children who are overweight also are at least twice as likely to have heart disease, diabetes, and orthopedic problems (Internicola, 2009). Sadly, children are being pressured into unhealthy lifestyles even more so than adults are.
Did you know that 35% of the United States population is considered obese? Also, 66% of the population is considered overweight or more? (Saint Onge 2014) Even more frightening, in 2012 the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than one third of children and adolescents in America were overweight or obese (CDC 2014). The media sources used investigates the political, scientific, historical, and cultural reasons behind the childhood obesity epidemic in America. Obesity is a rapid growing epidemic in America and these sources present the facts causing this epidemic. As well as how the children of the American society are being wrongly influenced by the media, especially advertisments. (Greenstreet 2008).
The health promotion will aim to increase physical activity and enhance the individual’s consumption of nutrient dense food based on Healthy People Guidelines 2010, as well as improve the health literacy for the parent and the individual with regards to childhood obesity. It is essential that the nurse, parent, and child have open communication with mutually agreed upon goals (Caprio et al., 2008). The goals set forth by the nurse, parent, and child are that the attendee will participate in at least 60 minutes of sustained aerobic activity 5 days a week for the next 6 months. The attendee will also eat at least one and half cups of fruit and one and half cups of vegetables daily for the next 6 mont...
Obesity in children is a growing crisis in our society. It has become an alarming concern for both communities and health care organizations. There are a number of ways to improve eating habits and encourage healthier choices. Making healthier foods accessible in groceries stores is one example. Our First Lady, Michelle Obama used the following quote during her speech in Chicago to call attention to the lack of healthy food stores in some communities in Chicago. She proclaims that it is a community matter and every one must be involve to make changes. Without change in the community individuals will not have opportunities to make healthier food choice .
This campaign, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, is aimed to solve the challenge of obesity in this generation’s children (“Let’s Move”). This campaign targets, not just the families, but also schools and communities to improve the environment for children to strive and become healthier. Starting with the family, the program discusses the important fact that children will eat better if they are surrounded by healthier food. Having the parents modeling good behavior and eating the healthier food influences the children and they too will eat the healthier food. They also include tips for how to eat healthier such as mixing vegetables into dishes, substituting fat-free milk or water instead of soda or other sweeter beverages, and substituting desserts for fruit, saving the “treats” for special occasions. In addition, eating as a family is seen to help with obesity because it creates structure in eating and decreases the snacking children have throughout the day (“Let’s Move”). In regards to school, by having the children participate in the National School Lunch Program, as well as the School Breakfast Program, the children are able to have a nutritious meal at a reduced cost or even free. Having options, such as a salad bar, and multiple options for children to choose from that are not just healthy but also delicious, will also help children see that eating healthy is not as atrocious as they perceived. Lastly, with the community in mind, the program, along with the U.S. Departments of Treasury, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services, is providing financing to develop grocery stores, farmers markets and corner stores capable of supplying and selling healthy food in underserved communities to eliminate food deserts. Many markets are even participating in WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and the
Our future begins with the children of today growing up to be the adults of tomorrow. “Childhood obesity is the condition of being overweight or severely overweight which causes risks to health between the age of 2 and 19” (“Childhood Obesity”). Childhood obesity is taking a huge toll on not only the physical standpoint of the child, but also their mental stability. Childhood obesity is no longer a concern with Americans; it’s now a problem that has spiraled out of control in the world. Obesity will never be resolved one hundred percent, but it’s the little impacts that concerned citizens bring to people’s attention that make the difference. One step in the right directions is better than not taking a step at all. Along with the many health issues associated with childhood obesity, there are three major effects that seem to stand out more around the world; the food we subject our bodies to, setting a pattern for the next generation(s), and it contributes to a child not reaching his or her full potential in life.
Forty years ago in America childhood obesity was rarely a topic of conversation. A survey done in the early 1970s showed that 6.1% of children between the ages 12 and 19 were overweight. Eight years later the same survey was done and 17.4% were considered overweight (Iannelli). “Childhood obesity epidemic in America is now a confirmed fact since the number of overweight or obese children has more than tripled during the last 30 years” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). “Over the last 20 years, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 6 to 11 years has tripled from 6.5% to 19.6%” (Childhood Obesity Epidemic). As a nation statistics should be alarming. Why are American children today so obese?
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. The quality of health of the food being served in school lunches is extremely poor and was allowed to decline even more with a new set of rule changes. However, there are some improvements currently being made to increase the quality of health of the food being served to students, including teaching them all about food and its nutritional information, both good and bad. In order for students to eat healthier lunches at school, the USDA needs to implement healthier ...
A lot of children are overweight and obese too, unfortunately. Childhood obesity is especially sad because, for the most part, the parents are at fault. The child, especially when they’re young, have no control over what they eat and couldn’t try to be healthy, even if they wanted to. “In 2013, 42 million children under the age of 5 were overweight of obese.” (Obesity and
According to the American Journal of Public Health, obesity can be linked to nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States (Laidman). The saddest part about this statistic is that obesity is, in most cases, brought on by the individual. With fast food being a cheap and convenient way to feed the family, obesity has constantly been on the rise since the industry’s proliferation. Poor diet combined with lack of exercise has caused the emergence of routine doctor visits for avoidable conditions. Beginning with the youth, school programs that teach nutrition and fitness can help stop the growing numbers. Help and support from the government to lower the amount of advertisements to the public and reconstruction of communities that are more walker and biker friendly can greatly reduce the amount of obesity in the nation. Obesity is a serious problem in the United States that can be defeated through education and self-control.
Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. So we are consistently after things that are cheap, fast and affordable. Who better to attend to our needs than the fast food industry?
"Childhood obesity, it's our tsunami, it's our Katrina." (Sanders-Butler). Childhood obesity has become a key problem in American society. More children are obese in the United States than any other country in the world. Part of the problem is the vast amount of fats and sugars in American diets. A larger portion of the health problem is the amount of sugar ingested daily in various foods. Schools all over the country are stocking their vending machines with junk food full of white refined sugar. For these, and many other reasons, high fructose and white refined sugar must be removed of school lunches and or vending machines.
Although kids like to eat junk food, we need to stop selling unhealthy snacks at school because of obesity, state restrictions, and the lack of eating time. Childhood obesity is growing throughout the world, it’s becoming a serious problem, and needs to be solved. “Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States since the 1970s.” (Source 1) This means that we need to stop obesity before it is too late. One of the reasons for obesity itself is that children have not had enough healthy food lately and with all this new junk snacks coming out, ilt is hard not to eat this tempting food. Another part of obesity is not enough exercise. Lately, People would rather sit in front of a screen instead of going for a walk in the park or riding
“Junk is the key word. Junk means trash, it is as simple as that. Why even bother? It is unhealthy, processed, gross, and high in fats, sodium, calories, cholesterol, carbohydrates, trans fat; this isn 't what students need to eat. Junk food is not healthy for a child, teen, or an adult.” (Mercola). It is time to stop and control what is being consumed by students, now. Having junk food available to students in schools is a decisions that has to be thought through all the way. Though junk food in schools may appear to be a good idea, in reality, junk food adds to the obesity epidemic, should be left for the parents to decide, works against the holistic well-being of children, and is more expensive in the
