Short Story Essay In “Chee’s Daughter” and “Everyday Use”, there is countless examples of how important family is. “Chee’s Daughter” also shows the importance of heritage and culture. In today’s culture, the meaning of family has been lowered. These two short stories define how family is a definite priority and very important. In “Chee’s Daughter”, multiple many different examples of family are shown, as well as shows how important it is. When Chee’s wife dies, Chee is in pain but his family and friends come to help comfort him so he doesn’t feel alone. They did exactly what family needs to do, be there for other members when they are feeling sad. One of the only things Chee has left is the “Little One.” Chee still has some of his friends and the Little One. The Little One is the only family he really has left so he really appreciates being around the Little One. When the challenge arises about Old Man Fat getting to share the custody of the Little One Chee is worried, and fights to have the Little One just for him. Chee helps out with the land as much as he can. At the beginning of the story tells you how Chee is in the canyon down by his land helping out. Chee said “If I give to the land, then it will give back to me.” By that he means if he keeps his land nice and making sure he’s always taking care of it, then the land will then produce good crop to feed him and many others. Chee starts to question his heritage towards the middle of the story. He questions it because his wife dies, and he might lose custody of his Little One. At any moment he could have just given up. If someone lost their wife and kid chances are they would be depressed, and or lose hope towards many things.
