There are several genres of literature. Literature that focuses on social conscious issues can and is very powerful. It allows a writer the opportunity to convey not only their feelings and different perspectives, but also provides an opportunity to creatively discuss current and past issues that have occurred or currently occurring in society. Two powerful pieces of literature that displayed social conscious issues were Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry (1507-1574), and “The Battle Royale” by Ralph Ellison (203-216), which whom were both black writers. Although both authors used several literary elements, they both creatively used symbolism to not only express their inspirations, but also to capture the reader’s attention. Symbolism is defined as the “use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense ("Symbolism - Examples and Definition of Symbolism).” The tone found in the Raisin in the Sun (Hansberry 1507) is both ironic and somber. Hansberry uses symbolism several times throughout her play. The first sign of symbolism was Mrs. Younger’s plant was not only a symbol of her dreams of having her dream home with a yard for gardening and providing and better life for her kids, but also analogous for her care of her children. Another example of symbolism used was Beneatha’s natural hair. Her hair symbolized her pride in her African heritage and her desire to discover her African heritage. The last example of symbolism identified was the insurance payment that the family received due to the death of Mr. Walter. Mr. Walter made sacrifices to ensure that in the event that he lost his life, his family would be o.k. He was well aware of the racial prejudice that prohibited him from attaining a house and a rewarding job throughout his own lifespan. His sacrifice symbolizes the efforts that generations of African Americans made to give their children’s dreams a chance for success ("A Raisin in the Sun Symbols"). In the “Battle Royale”, Ellis used several symbolisms to illustrate the racism that blacks endured during that time. It demonstrated the struggle that blacks faced to gain equal rights.
