How Do Sports Affect Our Economy? Sports have been a part of our society for many years and throughout history there have been many times where it has greatly helped either bring our society together or create an opportunity for our society to benefit from. Not all people have been involved with sports but in a survey recently conducted by myself Coveney (2014), I found that sports have had an impact on most people’s lives or at least someone’s life they are close to. Over the last year certain sports and athletes have been looked at in a negative light for events that have gone on off the field. Brands now endorse major athletes and have them speak on behalf of their brand to make more people buy their merchandise. Being able to see your favorite athlete wearing a certain brand makes you connect to it more and when you are out looking for something you will be more likely to buy that specific brand just because you recognize it. Beer has started doing this as well. If you watch an NFL game you will see it is sponsored by Budweiser. You can go into stores to buy beer in Rochester and they will have the Buffalo Bills logo on the can since it is the team most liked by people in the area. This is all cross branding. Being able to put a team’s logo on your food or beverages will catch the attention of people and it is all a part of the big marketing scheme these companies have to make money. Television helps all this happen. As most people know, the Super Bowl is one of the most watched events on television. Marketers pay millions of dollars for a 30 second commercial to air during that team because so many people are watching. Being able to make people feel a connection to a brand and have them recognize your name is one of the most important factors in getting people to buy your product and the more people buy, the more money is put back into our
