Maya Angelou “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning,” are words from Dr. Maya Angelou (Brainyquote). Angelou was an eloquent writer and speaker and spent her life turning those words set down on paper into something with a deeper meaning. She strived to make a difference in not only the African American community, but the entire country (Poetry Foundation). With her words, she touched on many topics including women’s rights, civil rights, while also reflecting on her personal life and the events that made her into the women she was (Kelsall). Not only was she an exquisite writer, but also was an admirable public speaker and a public figure. One of the topics she spoke often on is the problem of racism and discrimination in the United States, particularly the Southern United States. In 1959, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. seeked Angelou out as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (poets.org). She spoke to people of all ages, all around the country, her goal being not only to speak against racism, but also to raise the overall moral standards of the country and just bring us all closer as a people. Maya Angelou touched on many topics during her life from the ultimately negative effects of Black History Month, to African American rappers using racial slurs against their own race, to a reflection onto her own life using the theme of optimism in the midst of chaos (Kelsall). Her verbal speeches and writings contributed to literature written on the African American community. But Angelou’s words were not only reserved for the United States. In 1961, Angelou moved to Egypt with her boyfriend and worked as an editor for a magazine. After her and her boyfriend broke up she moved to Accra, Ghana and there her son got into a car accident, leaving him paralyzed. While taking care of him in Ghana, she worked at the African Review and stayed there for several years. She developed herself and her writings under the African cultural renaissance that was happening at the time (History.com staff). In Ghana, is where Angelou became close with civil rights activist, Malcolm X, helping him plan and organize several pro-civil rights organizations, but before the plans could be carried out he was X was assassinated (Lewis). The same time Angelou moved to Africa was around the same time the apartheid laws were being passed, causing Africans to face extreme discrimination causing a civil war within the continent.
