Envision being involved in the horribly difficult situation of enduring the struggles of emotional abuse coming from a family member. At the start, struggles come off as idle and not much occurring between the person dealing with the abuse, and the person initiating it. Soon enough, it progresses gradually and throws several difficulties in the way on the victim. These difficulties can potentially cause issues for the victim, can continue to throw the person off. Some difficulties include, fearfulness, depression, isolation, and a copious amount of other smaller issues may come up. It is perceived throughout relationships in Kambili’s family, leading to the overwhelming amount of doubt which alters each of their relationships. Altering of relationships can eventually lead to future issues within a family, causing emotions to be displayed in such a way that is unexpected from an individual. As tension begins settle for Kambili and her family, she begins exhibit feeling disoriented in the moment. Kambili’s thoughts convey the doubt felt. Revealing her thoughts, “It was too new, too foreign, and I did not know what to be or how to be” (258). In the moment, atmosphere in Kambili’s home is very dull, and drained out. Emotions are blown out of proportion. Well after experiencing death in the family, hurt is felt deeply and brings down the fearful actions that usually are seen. Display of abuse is shown subtly. Papa’s attitude towards his family is clear at this time, but it is also idle, evidently he is not too authoritative at this time. Doubt and emotion play an important role in how we perceive things.
