The Electoral College was originally created by the founding fathers of the United States and put in the constitution. It consists of 538 electors, these ultimately decided who become the president and vice president of the United States. The Electoral College is a process of electors voting and congress counting those electoral votes.
The Electoral College was created for two reasons, to create a buffer in between the population and the selection of the president and the government felt it gave more power to smaller states (Schulman). The first reason was put into place because the government feared that someone could come into the picture and persuade the population to elect them and they would be a tyrant that would completely change the country. The founders wanted to make sure that the United States would have a qualified presidential leader. They did not want the population to be manipulated and duped into electing the wrong leader. The founders feared that the population would not be able to elect the right person so they put the Electoral College into place. Founders also worried about the smaller states not having as much of a say in who become president and because of the Electoral College.
