There is no denying that women are given high standards when it comes to their appearance. Advertisements make women look flawless and always perfectly groomed; no matter what she is captured doing in the advertisement. Skyy vodka, especially in their July 2010 Maxim magazine advertisement, is guilty of discriminating against woman. At a first glance upon this hypnotizing ad, the white, flawless, perfectly groomed female appears to be in a dress with a matching background. At a closer look, the girl with luscious locks of orange hair is simply lying naked in a bed, under what is safe to assume, her man or any man’s sheets. It is said that he “redefined” the industry by quadrupling the distillation and tripling the filtration process, which then made for a smoother and better taste (Skyy). Skyy is also known for being the vodka with the fewest impurities and having a smooth, clean taste that keeps consumers coming back for more (Skyy). By looking at Skyy’s advertisement for their company’s new “Skyy Fusion” product, the female in the ad has no impurities. Skyy Vodka is known for its pure taste and it goes perfectly with any cocktail or just straight-up (Skyy). Skyy Fusion is offered in a variety of flavors including “ginger” as shown on the glass bottle in the advertisement. Skyy Vodka’s ginger flavor is said to be, “Vodka that goes all natural with the tantalizing taste of real ginger” and is also introduced as the line that is ranked number one in taste (Skyy). The ginger fusion ad is implying that the female in the photo has no impurities and she tastes so good, you will want to keep going back for more. It’s also stated that not only is the vodka ranked number one in taste, but she tastes just as good as the vodka. In using the sex sells aspect in Skyy’s campaign to sell their Skyy Fusion product, the woman is being exploited as an object. There is no doubt that men are still the dominant gender in our society today. Men would most likely never capture the sexy role she plays in this advertisement. The words, “Go Natural,” further show that women are viewed as objects. Those two words are also stating that it is natural for women to become promiscuous when they consume alcohol. She is a sexy, vulnerable, mature female, who is displayed naked in this advertisement. She’s clearly old enough to make her own decisions and the advertisement makes it seem like she is choosing to take part in risky behavior. By noting that, Skyy’s advertisement promotes the idea that all females are the same; if you give her a glass of vodka, she will end up in your bed. Most of the time, society overlooks personalities as well, which may be a link to why women are so insecure because today females have to depend more on their looks than personalities. By plastering the world with models who seem to have it the genetic jackpot, Dove set out to discredit this cultural cast created by our society. Body image, to some people, is the first part of a person they notice. A study conducted by Janowsky and Pruis compared body image between younger and older women. They found that although older women “may not feel the same societal pressure as younger women to be thin and beautiful…some feel that they need to make themselves look as young as possible” (225). I have examined and analyzed the COVERGIRL™ NatureLuxe advertisement that uses common feminine stereotypes. In this advertisement, COVERGIRL™, which runs in Seventeen magazines, targets women through their choices of colors, fonts, and images used. Certain stereotypes are used; such as, those who are more feminine tend to prefer lighter, happier colors, such as pink. Also, the use of a celebrity, who many young women look to as an icon, assists in the advertisement of the COVERGIRL™ product. COVERGIRL™, more than likely, is able to successfully market their lip-gloss product in the United States by using common gender stereotypes to show femininity and how those, mainly women, should be presented in today’s society.
As of the modern day, advertising is everywhere; it is on our televisions, we hear it on the radio and we see it on cars and trucks. Advertising can take many forms, one of which is propaganda. Propaganda techniques are useful in persuasion and drawing people to a certain cause, but mostly we hear of propaganda being used in times of war. However, the Dove’s Real Beauty campaign is a modern day example of propaganda that uses many known techniques of persuasion. In the essay “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” author and philosopher Susan Bordo discusses the history and current state of male representation in advertisements. While using her feminist background, Bordo compares and contrasts the aspects of how men and women are portrayed in the public eye. She claims that there has been a paradigm shift the media with the theory that not just women are being objectified in the public eye, but also men too. Since the mid-1970s, with the introduction of Calvin Klein commercials, men have started to become more dehumanized and regarded as sex symbols. In a similar fashion to how Bordo describes gender, race plays a similar role in the media. People of all different ethnicities and cultures are being categorized into an oversimplified and usually unfair image by the media over basic characteristics.
The portrayals of men in advertising began shifting towards a focus on sexual appeal in the 1980s, which is around the same that women in advertising were making this shift as well. According to Amy-Chinn, advertisements from 1985 conveyed the message that “men no longer just looked, they were also to be looked at” as seen in advertisements with men who were stripped down to their briefs (2). Additionally, advertisements like these were influencing society to view the male body “as an objectified commodity” (Mager and Helgeson 240). The objectification of women is a huge issue in society and is often led by advertising. However, many men still believe that the adverts depicting women in a sexual and often passive posture are not very offensive, but rather very funny or sexy. However, how would they feel if it were their daughter or sister being advertised throughout the world as a sexual object? The Tiger Beer advertisement shown in the appendix is a clear example of the objectification of women in advertising. The Tiger Beer advert was made to appeal to men from the age of 20 to 60.
Cohan overall leaves a strong impression on the reader that change in women’s advertising is very important and necessary. He effectively shows that women’s advertising is often unethical and ultimately needs to stop degrading women and move to more positive ways of advertising. Although, upon digging deeper in to Cohan’s specific claims on idealized imagery advertising, a gap emerges. Cohan calls the women in the ads who have been idealized “perfect” “ideal”, women that the “average women” will never be able to look like/be (327), but in all actuality, how can advertisements, or anyone for that matter, define what is “perfect”, “average”, “pretty”, “ugly”? Cohan overlooks this phenomenon, of the ever evolving, never definable term: beauty, therefore creating a need for deeper analysis.
