Introduction and Background: Presently, over 68% of the adults in the United States are either overweight or obese, and the percentage seems to increase from year to year. As a result, this widespread problem has caused many health problems, such as high blood pressure, and diabetes. Many people are aware of this problem and are in pursuit to lose weight for health and/or appearance reasons, however, more and more people seek this weight loss through pills and diets, but unfortunately, many of these alternatives cause harmful side effects which often leaves people in a worse condition than to begin with. Firstly, The Master Cleanse Diet, is introduced by Stanley Burroughs, an alternative health practitioner, in the 1940s. The diet initially began as an alternative cure to stomach ulcers, however, Burroughs started to claim that this diet could promote weight loss and help battle “every kind of disease” (Collins). Presently, the diet’s popularity has increased due to mainstream media figures sharing their weight loss success due to the diet’s help. This Master Cleanse Diet achieve this type of result by stripping away a significant amount of calories, which in return forces to body to lose weight due to a great caloric deficit. It claims that since proteins takes much more time to digest that the body would feel full much longer, whereas eating the same of calories in the form of carbohydrates would leave an individual to feel hunger much faster as the body burns carbohydrates faster than protein. Although this diet offers a better nutritional alternative than the Master Cleanse, getting rid of the body’s main fuel source, carbohydrates, and changing it into fats and proteins would inevitably cause side effects.
