By attending Southeastern Louisiana University, I have learned several different aspects that an educator must have to be effective. An effective educator must do whatever it takes to have their students succeed. Effective educators are passionate in everything they do. They are thoughtful and understanding. Effective teachers must have a well-managed classroom and are always prepared. They are willing to work collaboratively. They must engage their students every day and build a strong relationship with their students. All effective teachers are looking for opportunities to have an impact on their students. I feel like my strengths are in lesson planning and assessments. While making lesson plans, I try to make everything perfect. I have always been told, while making a lesson plan, write it as someone else is going to teach it. I make all my lesson plans very detailed. I also try to make my lesson plans engaging and fun for students, but also make sure the students are learning at the same time. I make sure my objectives are observable and measureable and classified according to Bloom’s Taxonomy. I also make sure my standards are always connected to the objectives. I try to always make sure I stay on topic with the standards. While making my instruction, I try to hook the students so they are ready to begin the lesson. During whole group instruction, I will teach the lesson and make sure I relate it to the student’s life. I feel like that will always catch student’s attention. The guided practice will always be done in groups and the independent practice will access the learning. While making a closure, I will make sure the students have learned what needed to be learned. I am really a perfectionist when it comes to making lesson plans, but I do have my weakness in other things. I feel like I will have a hard time managing my classroom. While making my classroom management plan, there are so many different ideas and ways to manage a classroom. I felt like it was hard for me to decide which ideas to choose. I feel like once I start working more in the field, it will be easier for me to know which ideas will be best for me to management my future
Today’s essential skills for both teachers and learners are metacognitive and process oriented and including critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and leadership, agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurialism, effective communication, accessing and analyzing information, curiosity and imagination Wagner (2008). Today’s educators must be masters of learning, not necessarily masters of content, and today’s learners must have the skills to adapt to any new situation.
Outstanding educators are caring. While most educators possess this quality, it is the notable teacher that is able to transcend his or her feelings into concrete and measurable ways that demonstrate an investment in the individual student. The outstanding educator asks and continues to ask; what can I do for this child? What does this child need? How will I deliver? What resources are available? The student’s progress and goals are constantly assessed and evaluated. Outstanding educators care about the whole child- academically and socially.
For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
Organization and advancework are essential skills that teachers, especially new ones, must use to ready themselves for life in the classroom. Curriculums may change, policies may shift, technology will continue to advance and unpredictable problems or crises will happen. While a management plan will not prevent problems from impacting the classroom, creating a flexible and adaptable one can give teachers a stronger sense of confidence in their work and ability because they have thought ahead for solutions to address them. The goal is to set up an environment for supportive learning that is friendly, safe and effective; an environment where the students’ success and achievement is the focus; an environment where both the students and teacher will feel more like citizens than tourists of their own classroom (Freiberg, 2005).
In summary, I believe an effective teacher has the most influence on an effective school. Because of this, I consider Cooper’s characteristics centered on effective teaching as most important. I do also believe that fostering effective teaching skills through effective professional development programs are essential to creating an effective school. Furthermore, I would not discount the roles of non-teachers in the school setting, as they contribute to a school’s overall effectiveness too.
I believe that the most important thing in teaching and learning is to insure the future success of the students. That’s why I am committed to placing the needs of the learner at the centre of everything I do. My teaching goal is to link course performance with the development of general learning skills, general chemical science skills, and specific subject matter skills.
I never had a teacher that I clicked with. Changing from school to school was hard and anytime I would get close to someone, I would end up changing schools. I never knew what it meant to have a teacher care about a student so much. That all changed when I moved to Delafield, Wisconsin in 2007. I started a new school in the fourth quarter and everything felt the same. All of a sudden, when seventh grade came around, I felt like a whole new person. This is the year that I met the teacher who became a part of my life. Mrs. Wroblewski has positively inspired me to follow my dreams and be who I want to be. Mrs. Wroblewski is an inspiration to me and a role model because she defended me when I was bullied, gave me great opportunities, a great listener, and is always there for me not matter what.
This I Believe Philosophy statement will include my thoughts and beliefs about classroom management with comparison to other theorists’ models. The major theorists that will be mentioned are Barbara Coloroso, Linda Albert, and Lee & Marlene Canter. I highly agree with the Canter’s and Coloroso’s models of classroom management because it best fits my personality as an individual teacher. I believe that an affective classroom management plan is first practiced and then modeled for improvements. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly.
Everyone knows that when it comes to making a difference in a child’s academic and life achievements, their teachers play a large role. A teacher’s ability to relate to their students, and teach them to achieve both socially and academically, contributes to how effective they are. What does it mean to be an effective teacher? Overall, there seems to be an emphasis on teacher effectiveness related to how well their students are performing on standardized testing. As teachers, we know there is more to being an effective teacher than just teaching our students based on tests.
My stage of development would be proficient in all four domains and components of professional practice, however, few domains and components are my higher strength and the other areas are needed improvement. The four years of my teaching experience, I had the opportunity to be evaluated by my principle, and she used these four domains of professional practice. Through her expertise and suggestions, she provided guidance to develop and improve my skills in the stage of proficiency or to the expert stage. The classroom environment and professional responsibilities domains are my strength that I worked on past few years. Nevertheless, I am continually building more skills and foundation on components of planning and preparing for the content and instruction part. I work with different students need and learning styles every year, therefore I am continually learning the new strategies and information to help all my learners to success. There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined.However i`ve always considered several of them essential.In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying,doesn`t underestimate the children,has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job.
Every teacher has their strong points as well as weak points. Teaching is very hard work and some of them never grow to be anything better than mediocre. They do the bare minimum and very little over and above the call of duty. There are several ways to become a great teacher. Teachers are truly dedicated workers who put a lot of time and schooling into being able to teach for the rest of their lives.
One good quality a teacher should have is, respect for the students. Each person’s ideas and opinions should be valued and not judged. They should be able to express themselves without feeling insecure. Another good quality is, having high expectations for your students. Each student should be encouraged to do their best and achieve goals that they may have never met before. Another good quality is, I believe a teacher should have is good communication skills. They should keep not only the students informed on what is going on in the class, they should definitely keep the parents informed as well. Teachers need to know how to communicate with all their students because some are at different levels than others.
This section addresses the matter of power in education. Since education is a larger context in which schools and classrooms are the microelements, understanding the way power residing in the education system can uncover the correlation between power on educational macro and micro scale, education, school and classrooms. To prevail the power of education, the starting points for this section discussion is the function or the capabilities of schools. A section following after looks at the bigger picture of the education structure wherein school, educational institutions and classrooms constituted. These reviews are subsequently followed by another section discussing about teachers’ position within the multi-dimensional entity as such of an education. Vietnamese context and teachers are also included in this section as a backdrop for the subsequent chapters.
Sometimes we are indeed our own worst critic. Growing up I always struggled in certain areas of school. Seeing some of my peers excel almost effortlessly in school made me think that perhaps I just was not as smart as them. Along the way, I realized that was not true at all. It turns out we all have strengths and weaknesses. Although I struggled with math, I always did exceptionally well in English. I just had to figure out what I was not good at and spend a little extra time and effort in those areas. In addition to realizing that we may be good at some things and not so good at others, one must also consider their individual style of learning. We all think differently and have different ways of understanding and retaining information.
