Education is a social problem that is very prominent in the world today. Education affects not only children currently attending school, but what they do when they are older. It affects where someone may end up later in their life, what job they will have, and how much money they will be making. Unfortunately, not everyone graduates high school, goes to college, and earns a high paying job. The cards some people are dealt can be much different, and education today arises as a social problem because of income, family life, and the area someone lives. These three areas can really help someone in their education, but it can also set them back. Income is one area that is related with the social issue of education. Those most affected are culturally diverse families who send their children to city schools. “High school students from various ethnic and socioeconomic groups understand that a good education leads to a good job. However, faced with limited access to educational attainment and occupational choice, many low income African American and Hispanic students develop compensatory beliefs about the value of academic effort and performance; they believe that academic effort and achievement will not pay off for them”(Leon-Guerrero, Zentgraf, 142). Children in these low income areas become accustomed to their way of life, and they believe they are stuck in their situation no matter what. This is what Spike Lee was trying to show in his film He Got Game. In the movie everyone settled for what they believed they deserved whether it be their education or their jobs. I will be analyzing the essay “Class in America --2012”. The topic of this essay is talking about does it matter what your social and economical standings are, and do they play a role in if you succeed in life. I personally agree with this. If someone is hard working and willing to do the job then I feel that they can be successful. Their background, race, and social and economical standings don’t justify everything that they are.
Education holds power over determining one’s class. Knowledge and refinement can set one individual apart from another who lacks the qualities of successful individuals. Finances and opportunities distinguish class meaning the lower class has difficulty in obtaining the same conditions of the upper class. Education ultimately dictates success and power in society. Education is taken for granted and should be recognized for the significance it possesses.

It is the government’s responsibility to see education be equal for all, but also an individual responsibility to take the time to sit down with each other and talk about the importance of school, learning, and education.
Now, society has taught us that without education we cannot afford to make good money which is not always the case. Growing up not only did I hear it from my parents but I also have heard it from other parents, teachers, and old students. School culture and society culture has given us a point of view where we can’t get a decent job or feel like we will without a paper that will look good on our resumes. This affects what we do in our everyday life trying to fit education with work or people to meet. We as a society go out of our way to spend time in school so we can try and get the best out of life changing our schedules and spending money on something these cultures have set up or we ourselves do for the sake of a good
There are about 60 million school aged children in the world who are not in school, according to the article “Education”. Educated children have more opportunities compared to non-educated children, however, it is not just educated children that get more opportunities, but also educated adults. It does not matter how old someone is when they get their education, but that they are getting an education at all. This is portrayed in the excerpts “Me Talk Pretty” by David Sedaris, “The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society” by Jonathan Kozol, and “Learning to Read” by Frederick Douglass. Education leads to individual success and empowerment.
Education has been historically considered as an equalizer of society in America, allowing the opportunity for even the disadvantaged to reach success. Race was once the strongest factor in determining future achievement, but today Stanford Sociologist, Sean F. Reardon, says income level has become more consequential (Tavernise). President Barack Obama was one of the lucky few able to overcome the obstacles he faced growing up being both African American and underprivileged, but most children are not as lucky (Rampton , Nawaguna). In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, the Lacks family lived in poverty and struggled to perform well in school, resulting in many of them dropping out even before high school (Skloot). The success gap between high and low income students in the U.S. has increased significantly in recent years (McGlynn). The educational achievement of students is significantly affected by their home life, and those living in poverty are much more likely to fall behind academically than children coming from affluent families.
Education is a very important factor in a person’s life and there is different parts of education whether that may be primary, secondary or further education like college or university. These skills and knowledge that is taught develop us into the person we become later in life. Learning just doesn’t stop after school or further education, each individual develops and continues to learn through life for example jobs and new experiences. It wasn’t until I became a college student that I started to question what education meant to me. For a lot of us, immigrants, we come with the purpose of achieving something greater than our parents. The way I grew up living was enough to encourage me to get educated. But the struggle of an unsuccessful life taught me Education was the road to a successful path. But what happens when the only way to get there, is the one thing that can stop you? Education is valued greatly in the contemporary world. We believe that the knowledge gained at universities and colleges is the key to finding a good job, being prosperous and succesful in life. Education is seen as a kind of legacy – it encompasses all the values, experiences, and achievements of our ancestors, and in order to ensure the survival of a culture it must be passed on to future generations. However, schooling should never have been made mandatory.
Education is an activity we all feel that we know something about, having had personal and direct experience of it. Education has become a large industry employing many hundreds of thousands of people in Britain alone. It is supposedly an important part of ensuring future economic development yet it also imposes a major financial cost. Education plays a central role in society and also in all of our lives. So education is a very complex set of activities and institutions which is not easy to define. Students know that they have to trust that sometimes, what they are doing isn’t going to affect them immediately but it will in the long run. Peters (1966) an education philosopher said:

Research has shown that environmental circumstances and family issues greatly influence a child's future because the impact of the socioeconomic status depends on the level to which an individual becomes successful in life. Research also shows that family conditions can impact a child’s education and their quality of life. Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
Our subjectivity is heavily influenced by the amount of education that we receive. The effort that people contribute to enhancing academic excellence today is what makes learning possible and effective. Through the proper use of our academic knowledge we can construct society together. Schooling is an evident pathway toward generating social change and it is important that education is properly enforced and easily accessed by all people. Because education enables a person to grasp an understanding of his or her society, we as educated people have a crucial responsibility for contributing to social advancement.
