Even though these drugs are supposed to be used for medicine, many people misuse them and take them just because it makes them feel good. Drugs could be very dangerous and cause many problems if they end up in the wrong hands which could lead to overdose, medical problems, or even death. I believe that decimalizing drugs is a moral and smart idea that will have a major impact on the world. For example, if a person is stressed they rely on drugs because it makes them forget about all their worries. Once these people start using drugs, it’s hard to stop using them and they become addicted. Sending people to jail after getting caught with drugs won’t do anything for them, it won’t stop them from doing it when they get out. Offering a voluntary treatment program like Portugal did would allow these people to get the help that they knew they needed. Some people are simply just too embarrassed to go search for help on their own so when they get caught many of them will take the opportunity to participate in the program. I believe people should take drugs more seriously and be able to allow any help to people that truly need it. Since drugs are illegal, they make sure to try and keep everything a secret. If people inform the police about someone who is selling drugs they could end up angry enough to go and hurt them. Some people join these drug dealing groups because they need money and it’s an easy way to get it. Because these people need money, they do whatever it takes to get it, even if it involves killing another person. Doing drugs all the time could lead to changes in skin, health problems, and mental disabilities. Even though some people believe it would be better to stay with solving drug problems as a crime, it isn’t getting us anywhere. The minimum sentencing regarding drug crimes should be reduced because it negatively impacts everyone involved and is an unjust punishment across the board. I will discuss how the War on Drugs came about, how the current system for these crimes is racist and classist, the negative impacts that come from it across the board, the prison overcrowding issues, and how the minimum sentencing policy is ineffective. No matter how you look at it this issue, one wins in this situation and it’s time for a change.
Our economic statue tells us that a supply rapidly grows up to meet a demand. But if the demand is widespread then suppression is useless. It is harmful to society because since by raising the price of the drug in question, it raises the profits of middlemen, which gives them an even more powerful drug to stimulate demand further. The vast profits to be made from cocaine and heroin, which would be cheap and easily affordable, even by the poorest in affluent societies if they were legal. Besides, it is well known the illegality in itself has attraction for youth already inclined to disaffection.

Many feel today we are loosing the war on drugs. People consider legalization unnecessary. They feel that it will increase the amount of drug use throughout the world. They state that in many cases, drug users who have quit quit because of trouble with the law. Legalization would eliminate the legal forces that discourage the users from using or selling drugs. They also say that by making drugs legal, the people who have never tried drugs for fear of getting caught by the law will have no reason to be afraid anymore and will become users (Potter 1998).
Drug legalization is an end to government-enforced prohibition of certain substances. It has sparked a great debate in the U.S. over the past couple of years. With two states, Colorado and Washington, already completely eliminating the illegalization of marijuana, should the rest of the country legalize the use of marijuana and other drugs too? There are many advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana, but other drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy, etc., should they be legalized? Are the health issues too much of a risk? The question is; which will outweigh each other? In my own opinion, I think the only drug that should be legalized is marijuana. Although only legalizing it to an extent with boundaries and restrictions. Many people in this world have disorders that can be treated with the use of medicinal marijuana. The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated topic for many of years. Since the first president to the most recent, our nation’s leaders have consumed the plant known as weed. We now need to look at what would change if marijuana were legal. Benefits to the economy and agriculture, health issues, and crime rates are three areas worth looking at. It uses a “3 prong approach to prevention and intervention” “known as the agent, host, and the environment.” This is because threats to public health require a susceptible host, an infectious agent, and a supportive environment that allows the spread of infection. By doing this, professionals are able to develop preventions against issues of public health. This would include teaching children to say no to drugs at a young age in order to prevent addiction in the future, as they are susceptible hosts to becoming addicts. Some people are likely to generalize about the causes of drug related crimes and say that they are simply related to people who do not do any good for our society. However, in certain instances drugs can be used as a source of income for people and they commit crimes in order to facilitate that goal (Nurco, 1998). These people have no way out of their drug lives and therefore may not necessarily choose this life style but are brought up into it.
