Domestic violence is a form of violence or aggression which takes place usually within the home. Domestic violence usually occurs when someone takes advantage of their power in a relationship or after separation. Domestic violence used to be such a small issue and no one really took notice of it. In 2005, 62.3% of victims didn’t contact the police. The CPS did not start monitoring domestic violence crimes until 2004. Since 2005 there have been many government and non-government organization trying to get society aware of the problem and also campaigns. Domestic violence has a huge impact on women and how they can see the world and how they act long and short term. 85% of domestic violence is against women but how does this effective them? Some women can try and mass out the pain of being abused with harmful drugs, alcohol and smoking. This can lead to even greater physical and emotional harm. In most cases being a women victim of domestic violence can have more of a mental effect then auto accidents, rapes or muggings.
Women can have a large range of physical injures such as injuries ranging from cuts, bruises, and black eyes to miscarriage, bony injuries, splenic and liver trauma, partial loss of hearing or vision, and scars from burn or knife wounds. Injuries to the breast, chest and abdomen are more common in battered women, as are the presence of multiple old and current injuries. Defensive injuries are common. However it can have an even greater effect on them with them being homeless and bankrupt and also feeling worthless and unwanted. Non-government organizations such as Safe Horizon can have an impact in helping victims by using strategies to get society to donate and help provide victims with a safe place to be. The government has only quite recently been aware of the issues and have been trying to help provide victims with shelter and getting them financially stable. The organizations both non-government and government have been effective in some ways however domestic violence is still happening and people are still being greatly affected by
