Doing Good for Others

Just recently the Miss C-I Court visited Gillette Children’s Hospital. While we were there I met a mother of a child visiting the hospital for her daughters check-up, after the surgery she just had. The mother and I got to talking about life and the crazy things that can happen unexpectedly, when she started to cry. I asked her why and she proceeded to tell me how thankful she was for the Miss Crosby-Ironton Court for volunteering our time to play with the children. At this point I started tearing up as she continued to explain how she didn’t get to choose her life. She didn’t get to choose to have her daughter be in this position, but we girls got to choose to be there and help out. When she got done talking, it reminded me why I love what I do. There is no greater feeling than volunteering your time to make someone else’s day. There are a lot more benefits to volunteering than the heartwarming feeling you feel when the day is over.
Volunteering is the free offer to do something; for example my friend, Madison, volunteers her time every day during her open hour to go help one of the elementary school teachers Mrs. Larson. There are a variety of ways to volunteer. Such as, helping an elementary school kid with homework, going to a hospital and occupying children before their appointments, and going to a nursing home and reading to the patients that no longer can. You could even mow someone’s lawn or even walk someone’s dog. There is really no limit to do something for free.
Volunteering can also help you with your social skills. If you’re a shy person donating your time is a good way to get you out of your box. When you’re meeting new people you learn to start up conversation and keep conversations going, and you can even learn...
