The bulk of our diets should be carbohydrates because of the importance that they serve on the body. Carbohydrates give our bodies fuel and energy that allows the rest of our body to function properly. The only other nutrients that fuel our bodies are protein and fats, which have their disadvantages. Protein when consumed in an excess amount actually is not helpful. While fats are only used as fuel by certain areas in the body. Our brains and nervous systems do not find fats to be useful when conducting energy. Carbohydrates not only provide energy for the body but they also help with glucose storage, raw materials, structures and functions, digestive tract health, blood cholesterol, blood glucose, satiety, and body weight. The dietary guidelines for Americans says that we should consume between 45 and 65% of our calories from carbohydrates and a DRI of a minimum of 130 g/day for adults and children. When consuming this recommended amount, you are nourishing and providing the brain with glucose. Foods that should be consumed when monitoring your carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, and grains. With grains you should steer clear of refined grains if possible and lean towards wheat pasta and bread. Look for whole grains, they also contain more fiber. Some vegetables that you could eat would be broccoli, spinach, carrots, corn, green beans, or even asparagus. These all contain fiber and are a starch. For fruits you could eat pears, blackberries, prunes, and figs. They are high in fiber and their natural sugar concentration.
While carbohydrates have many advantages to them, they also have many disadvantages, especially if you are in taking the wrong type of carbohydrates such as refined grains. One negative aspect on carbohydrates ...

When too much sugar is consumed and not needed to make energy, it then begins to store as fat. I am a pretty healthy eater, except when I am presented with a time crunch, which I sometimes will then rely on processed foods. However, when it comes to carbohydrates, I have been educated on proper intakes and foods that are good to consume since my boyfriend is diabetic. I like to eat whole grain, wheat pastas, and fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible. On our food log for three days, I did notice that I had consumed a lot of refined grains. I am going to keep a closer eye on that now that I have learned the differences and try to replace them with a healthier substitute.
