According to Cox & Blake (1991), developing an organizational culture that values cultural diversity in the workplace is one of the spheres of activity in the management of cultural diversity (p.46). As part of a valuing diversity approach, organizational leaders should ensure that the organization is flexible enough to accommodate employees from different cultural backgrounds. The process of developing an organizational culture that values cultural diversity includes valuing cultural differences, promoting cultural inclusion, and treating cultural differences as prevailing value systems.
Secondly, applying leadership principles across a culturally diverse workforce in a global work environment involves the establishment of effective human resource practices. In this case, organizations must develop and implement HR policies and practices that attract and retains employees from varying cultural backgrounds based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Cox & Blake (1991), states that attracting and retaining excellent workers from different demographic groups is the second certainty-linked issue regarding competitiveness (p.48).
Today’s global work environment is characterized with an increase in the proportional representation of women and racioethnic minorities in the employment pool. This trend contributes to the need for organizations to recruit and retain employees from these groups. Actually, organizations that fail to make suitable changes that enable successful use and maintenance of workers from different cultural backgrounds can anticipate considerable competitive disadvantage as compared to those that effectively manage cultural diversity. Today’s global business environment is characterized by increased communication across borders either in person or electronically. This trend has had significant impact on businesses to an extent that the work environment is characterized by increased diversity. The modern workplace is made of people for different demographic and cultural backgrounds. As a result, there is need for organizations and companies to apply leadership principles across a culturally diverse workforce in a global work environment. This process requires effective human resource policies and practices, development of a suitable corporate culture, initiating change, and focusing on employee motivation and development. When conducting businesses in foreign countries, companies need to understand the varying social and cultural issues in order to develop appropriate business strategies.
