Montrez Culbreath 11/30/15 Against gun control Over the past few years, the debate over guns has been an issue of major importance. Should there even be gun control laws, is the question. Guns are dangerous, and they can kill but are the only weapons that can cause death. The reason why many people today are for gun control is due to the recent mass shootings taking place in the country, such as Sandy Hook school shooting in NewtonConnecticut. Also the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado in 2012; the shooting at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon that happened this year. No matter if the government enacts more gun control laws or not, guns will always find their way in to the wrong hands. If the government takes away all guns then who 's not to say it won 't lead to a tyrannical government that turns on the masses. You also have a right to protect yourself and property with any weapon you chose especially if own your guns legally. Gun control will decide on what type of firearms a person can have. If a person obtains their firearms legally then why should they have to suffer because of a couple bad people 's actions? With gun control, how will people then be able to form a militia and stop foreign troops from invading and taking over the country God forbid the day ever comes. In the United states, all it takes to hold a firearm is a background check and a safety class. Although the second amendment requires some decent documents , the qualifications to obtain a firearm needs to be revised to a mental check, a family history check , and also to make it a priority for reinforcement to check on the registered firearm every six to twelve months.
Stricter gun laws simply will not work because the law-abiding citizens will be the only ones to follow the rules. When it comes to violence, the stricter gun laws will only help the criminals hurt more innocent people. The reason that I believe this is because during the Prohibition years in the United States people were still able to find alcohol and the government could not do anything about it. Then drugs became a huge problem and the government still has yet to find a way to stop all drugs from reaching consumers. This same exact thing will happen with guns. The debate over the right to bear arms according to the Second Amendment has been a hotly contested issue for many years in American history. The matter has been one of the most controversial issues in the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first; disputed between politicians on the liberal and conservative side along with issues such as abortion, capital punishment, and gay marriage. The Supreme Court has officially defined the controversial Second Amendment by stating that states have the right to maintain a militia separate from a federally controlled army (Gale Encyclopedia, pg. 155-162). Gun control is a serious topic in the United States at this moment. Record number of Americas are purchasing firearms for either protection or recreational use. The increase in guns across the country has led to a substantial increase in the number homicides and public shootings. Although the second amendment to the United States Constitution allows American citizens the right to bear arms, what can the federal government and citizens do better for protection from gun violence? Currently, many states and cities have certain regulations on gun possession; however, there has yet to be a federal stance on how to control and curb gun violence. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY I keenly became aware that in my own neighborhood there were educational disparities, street violence, and police brutality. The debate over gun control in America has constantly been brought up over the years due to gunmen killing large amounts of people in shootings. From Columbine to Sandy Hook, or the shootings of the two reporters in West Virginia, these public shootings are occurring everywhere. Lawmakers and civilians alike are pushing for increased gun control in hopes of preventing the same tragedies. Anyone that has been affected by the shootings has been pushing Congress and state governments to force new sanctions on the government. Over the past three years, Congress has shot down all the laws despite the large amounts of public support.
Gun control does not only take guns away from criminals, gun control also limits law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves and their families when necessary. Those who argue for gun control usually state guns are a part of most violent crimes. However, this is not always true. While it is true that limiting gun ownership with laws could prevent individuals from possessing guns, it does not prevent people from illegally having or using guns. Those who carry guns legally are not the problem.
Gun control only takes guns away from law-abiding people and it does nothing to stop criminals from buying illegal guns, who are unlikely to obey the law and register their guns at all.
