A major concern in the business community is discrimination in the workplace. Not only has the United States become a melting pot, creating an increase in cultural diversity within the workplace, but society changes have added to a gender diversity as well (Deitch & Hegewisch, 2013). Company goals require these employees from different backgrounds and ethnicities to work together for a common goal. With that said, people are inclined to have misunderstandings when it comes to individuals who are different than they are.

Unfortunately, in the 21st Century, workers still need to be protected against unfair treatment and discrimination by other employees and even management. Companies are held accountable in protecting their employees from any form of discrimination in the …show more content…

There are various areas of protection that require employees to provide reasonable accommodations to those that are in this protected group.

Race discrimination would include an act towards someone regardless if it were an applicant or employee negatively because they are a race or personal characteristics connected to race.

Religion or a specific belief discrimination is when an employee is connected to a particular; religion or philosophical belief. Regardless if the discrimination is based on either perception or association.

Sex and sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee is endangered due to negative employment act, harassment, or denial of benefits due to their sexual orientation, or the sexual orientation (Mayeri, 2015).

Gender reassignment is not currently of the protected class as well as transgendered/transsexual even so it does protect transsexuals from discrimination due to the lack of ability to identify with their perceived birth sex or gender.
