In today’s society there are many pets that are out there looking for a place to eat and a roof that is over their head. There are many people who could be that one person to give that pet what it needs. ASPCA is a place where they shelter many animals that are in need of a place to stay. Most of the animals that stay are there because of people who cannot look after their pets. The animals are left on the street left to defend themselves or when a pet has a litter and the owner does not have the money to afford the animals. The Madison area needs its own ASPCA due to the increase of the pet population and to offer adoption services.

Animal shelters need people that are great with pets or people that just like working for animals on their free time. Help and volunteer at a animal shelter it can make a pet feel good and you are also helping the community- ("Ten Ways to Help"). In today’s society people need to get active and work with something. Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. As you can probably tell we aren’t a small recuse, the reason we are so over populated is because we are the only shelter that takes in bully dogs. But volunteering with the actual organization is not the only way I give my time to them, at least once a month I also volunteer at charity events sponsored by the SPCA. Through all of that I still have not made it home yet, when I arrive home around 10:15 most nights. I come home to a lonely apartment with my two cats Angel, and Sammie and my dog Ringo. In 2010 the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) came out with a commercial that would shock the advertisement industry. The effectiveness of this commercial is proven, simply by watching the reactions of the commercial’s viewers. For those who have never seen the video it has a very sad and morose tone to it. The commercial begins with showing pictures and videos of suffering animals with the song “Angel” playing in the background. While this is going on the narrator of the commercial (Sarah McLachlen) is softly talking about the suffering and abuse that these unfortunate animals go through. Through many different rhetorical techniques the viewers are many times brought to tears after watching this commercial. When thinking of pieces of Rhetoric that demonstrates the use of pathos, the first thing I think of is this commercial. The sole purpose of this commercial is to emotionally compromise the audience until eventually the viewers will donate money to the cause. This video is so affective at completing this goal because of the way it connects to the viewers, and the way it uses many different methods to attack the viewer’s emotions.
The humane society is a nonprofit organization, which is a corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. The humane society is also a 501c, a nonprofit American tax-exempt organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to decrease suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act passed in 1958, this would change the lives of millions of animals around America. The Humane Society began investigating animal experimentation around the 1950s to gather evidence on animal neglect or suffering. Myers said,” every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” In 1961 HSUS investigated dog dealers in the U.S. to gain support for a law to be passed that would prevent cruelty to animals in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966 life magazine published an essay about dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their congressional representatives and demanded action to protect animals and stop pet theft. Later that year the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humane law passed since world war II. Other goals they had during this time were: reduce homeless dogs and cats, reform inhumane euthanasia practices, redact abuses by pet stores and pet breeding trades, and help wildlife and marine life. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. From family dogs to strays, you never know what dogs will turn up in shelters. Going into a shelter to volunteer you have to be fast acting, strong and firm. Walking dogs who have never been on a leash can be hazardous when walking them by dog aggressive dogs. Dog fights through cages can be dangerous to both dogs. Do not let that scare you away, the rewards of knowing you are helping that animal pay off in the end. New dogs constantly come into the shelters as others get adopted. Every time you volunteer, whether it is everyday or on the weekends, you will see new faces of people who have the same passion for animals. Instead of learning about volunteering from an indoor setting, I was able to first-hand experience volunteerism. I truly enjoyed being able to help my community while also earning credits by doing so. It was a win-win! If I had the opportunity, I would definitely take a class similar to this one. I will be transferring to the University of Kentucky and I am hoping that they will have some clubs/organizations that specialize in volunteering so that I can continue to help with the community. You will encounter some rough patches while volunteering, but that should never discourage you from continuing on. I know that at first while volunteering at MCHS, it was pretty strenuous. I hadn’t worked with any other animals other than my own and I had never volunteered at an animal shelter before, but everything ended up working out. I learned so much more about working with animals, gained people skills while working with other volunteers/adopters, and became more aware of my community’s needs.
